Solar panel and air compressor install on Compass Rose

Postby Shadow Catcher » Sun Oct 02, 2011 5:40 am

With the goal of boondocking The decision to add a solar panel and controller was made back when we had MM #1 and I acquired a 185W panel and controller. Then the lesson, do your home work, the panel is meant for a grid tie system and high voltage (but it was such a great price ) so a Morningstar MPPT controller was purchased, and they play well together. The panel would have fried the solar controller I had, on a cloudy day it puts out over 35V

The mounts are plastic and they are attached with 3M VHB tape, a lot of it! No holes through the roof.

Image

I used SS security screws with a head not found in the Harbor Freight bit set

I don't like putting holes through things if I don't have to. This is probably because it really makes it difficult to keep out water and resists changing your mind about where something should go.
I used the 3M cleaner used for Filon prior to apply the tape (cleanliness is important to success).
The controller is attached to the battery box and the battery box is attached with, you guessed it VHB tape. Lest any one become upset the battery is an AGM and fear of hydrogen out-gassing is minimal.

Image
Note you can see the air tank and yes it is installed with VHB tape

The air pump is installed on a plate to give sufficient surface for the tape. I am going to have to do something to better isolate vibration as this setup resonates the tongue box (Really Really noisy) Note the screws are aluminum and the plate is tapped for the screws.

This shows the tape on the mounting plate for the air tank. I used quick disconnects to attach the pump to the air tank and since you need to be able to drain the water condensate out the bottom has to be down and open to atmosphere when disconnected.

Image

There are ten fittings, and the combinations of how you can assemble them, well let me put it this way I assembled and disassembled this more than a few times. Included is a pressure switch for the pump valve for air to the pressure gauge set up a quick disconnect so that I can fill tires etc.

Image

This is the gauge set up, each air shock can be controlled separately so that you can help level the trailer. The two brass things are check valves.

This is the whole thing more or less installed and after testing for pressure. Thanks to the ladies at the Parker store for help in obtaining the fittings valves and tubing.

And finally here is where they are going.

Wow, that is really cool! I hope you post a review after you've used it a bit. That would be really neat on an off road trailer.

Bruce

Edit note: Super sanitary panel install, where did you get the mounts?

Why, some say, do we install solar panels and an air compressor? Because we choose to install solar panels and an air compressor!!! Nice!

   8)

SC the purpose for the air suspension is to gain more ground clearance for rough roads, the side benefit is leveling. I did not attach or use leveling jacks but do have blocks that go under the wheels (had to use them in Indiana), and this will hopefully allow me to fine tune level a bit better.
We, BT (before tear) tented on the North shore of Lake Superior and will camp in one spot for a week or more we then canoe surrounding lakes. I want to not have to run a generator or Idle the car plus the panel comes off the trailer and is tied into a grid tie inverter off setting electrical use from the utility.
The shocks are shown attached to MM#1 which did not have brakes and the adapter block will have to be remade to fit MM#7 Compass Rose which does. My hope is that we can bolt to the brake backing plate simplifying the whole set up. The goal is to come up with a commercially viable set up for off road use in kit form. This also add the shocks which are good thing and needed in my not so humble opinion.
CR wet and loaded is about 1500 Lbs and is 10X6 excluding tongue box. I will get an official weight once everything is added
