Getting rid of plastic smell in our water container.

We have a new 7-gallon water jug. Can anyone suggest a good way to get rid of the plastic-y smell inside? :surrender:

I would fill it, pour in a quart of rubbing alcohol and a pound of sodium bicarbonate and swish it, then rinse.

Based on what do you suggest this?

Rubbing alcohol sometimes contains substances other than isoproply alcohol, some of which (oils), I wouldn't want in my water container.

I was not aware of oils being in isopropyl alcohol. Where did you hear that? I do know it will suspend oils in water allowing them to rinse out of container. Feel free to skip the alcohol and go with the sodium bicarb, by all means.
Happy trails,

That is what I have always done. It may take a few cycles, but it has always worked for me.

They carry some stuff at the RV dealers in parts that will do that also, I use it in our pop up water tank every spring after it sets all winter. Don't remember the name for it though .

I used the Camco 40206 RV TastePURE Drinking Water Freshener to kill the taste.

When I got mine I filled it with hot water and a cap full of bleach and let it sit for about an hour. Then I rinsed it out several times and it was ready for use. Clean and disinfected.

I'm going to have the best-smelling water jug around...thanks, everyone! :shake hands:

i just took the lid off and let it sit in the sun outside , never had a flavor after that,,, but it may depend on what the plastic is.

as far as alcohol,,,, why not just use rum? even if it doesn;t remove the taste,,,, by the time you drink a bit of it ,,,you won;t really care.
