emergency window (egress) as a teardrop trailer door???

Postby jonnyo » Fri Oct 21, 2011 10:41 am

Can you make a door out of a egress window? I have a nice 22X36 window at my rv dealership. it s use but in great condition and for a nice price. I was wondering if this could be made as a door for a teardrop. I have never play with one and dont really know much about those but after making a search on the forum, i could not find any info on this?

finding a door for a teardrop isnt easy. Even more difficulte when living in canada and factoring the price of shipping, tax, duty from the usa, so i m definitly open to creative ideas!

:)

I think most egress windows are designed for the hinge to be horizontal, it may take some work to get it to work correctly if mounted vertically.

If I'm not mistaken, the early Little Guy doors were actually slightly re-worked egress windows. You might have to put something at the bottom of the hinge to keep the "door" from sliding down, but it's very doable.

Good Luck, and in the meantime ...

I think that maybe incorporating a standard "open from the outside///open from the inside" lock/mechanism would be your biggest hurtle to get over.

I have used horizontal mounted windows mounted vertically a few times and that was my problem.

Other than that...they worked!

With an escape window, as I recall all they have is 1 or 2 Red handles that only allow it to open out!

But! where there's a will...there's a way.

That is exactactly what I did. But I mounted the whole assembly in a door frame and used the window as origionally mounted. It has several nice features.--larger than normal, opens 180 degrees upward, sliding screen on the bottom and tinted glass. Mine are only 31"x25.5". They came out of a 15 passenger van. The only drawback I can see is that they are pretty heavy. Good luck!
