Hi from astoria oregon

Postby RIVERMOUTH » Wed Oct 26, 2011 2:38 pm

Hi folks, I'm from astoria Oregon. I'm new to the forum. I found this place by accident while looking up information on building my first teardrop trailer. I'm getting ready for my build. It's getting colder and and starting to rain more, so this will be my winter indoor project. I have shop space to build my trailer in my garage so I'm super excited.
thank you.
Darren

I want to build an aluminum body teardrop. I have been trying to find a good trailer to put it on. I was looking on HF's website at the 300.00 trailer. i'm going to go look at it this weekend. any thoughts on that? I have a friend who owns a metal fab shop so i have proper welding equipment and all the safety you can think of. I'm working out a wiring diagram and trying to figure out how to convert a deep cycle battery to power gadgets inside the teardrop. I have been looking around on here, But I am definitely not an electrician.

I'm not sure if I want to put a galley on it or not...
1. it rains a ton here and really want to hassle with leaks.
2. I cold weather camp and wish to have the least amount of air leaks.

list of gadgets.

L.E.D lights
T.V. \ DvD
radio MP3 player.
12 volt outlet
110 outlet to plug in my laptop or other fun electronics.
heater.

the things I am not sure of...
aluminum thickness.
securing the body to the trailer.
side marker placement.
taillight placement.
type of battery.
thickness (gauge ) of wiring to use.
can a household 110 outlet work?
insulation?

As one who took OUT the galley... DO NOT LEAVE IT OUT ! You will NEED to store yer canned goods, skillet, pots& pans, flatware,spatula... ya know THE WORKS.. IN yer galley rather than in a box .. on yer matress.

There is a way to insulate the galley wall ! Trust ME.. you WANT a galley fer storin yer "stuff"

I jus had my galley put BACK IN !

"I" also used a household "plug" fer my lites,fan,radio.. when there is elec Shore Line.. I also am NO electrician.

Have NO sink in the galley.. it's mostly fer storin my cookin stuff...plates,pots 7 pans, spatula, canned goods, etc.

Jus Y 2 cents

River -

Welcome also to the maddness!!!!!!!!!!!! Sounds like you are on your way to building a great little Tear....... Enjoy the build and have fun doing it.

You'll find that people will always ask - "DO YOU SLEEP IN THERE???"

"WHERE DID YOU GET THIS?"
"HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO BUILD?" and "HOW MUCH?"

And I always answer - "IT COST ME TWO TRIPS TO THE ER!" (had to remove metal splinters from my feet.....

Have fun and don't forget to ask many many questions - there are some very impressive craftsman on this site............

8) Hi Darren from Oregon. Astoria is a beautiful part of the state, and it gets wet ......... people tend to rust rather than tan....

You really should consider a galley. Where will you prep your food, store it, and the cooking items? If you have ever camped in one w/o a galley, you will be in and out of the tow vehicle a lot to get your food/ ice chest. An open galley can be easily closed in drippy weather and the investment of an EZ-up or other type of covering to put over the top is handy in preventing moisture from coming directly on to the TD. Have a good time planning your build.

Browse around a while. If you click on the link below you can see what my neck of the woods looks like. Keep us posted on your progress.

Thanks for the into folks. I've decided to put the galley and I'm really excited to start up. I've been doing a lot of drawing and planing. I have an easy up. So that will help. I'll post some pictures son.

Hello Darren, welcome to the best teardrop message board around. It looks like you are really dedicated to actually building a teardrop trailer, good for you. Remember, this is the perfect place to ask questions as you go along, and you will always get an answer, if not many. I see you are looking at a HF trailer, which is a trailer that has been used by many, including me. You mentioned the need for welding and I wonder where any welding is going to be needed. Are you planning on metal fabricated support members for the sides and roof framing and then covering with aluminum? I suppose you already know that most of the "aluminum" teardrops are really wooden ones that are clad with the bright, shiny aluminum skin.

I just want to encourage you to start building as soon as you can, do continue your plans for a galleyand by all means take pics as you go along, we just love pics. Good luck on your build, and welcome to the wonderful world of teardrop camping.
