Heating

Postby Deryk the Pirate » Fri Oct 28, 2011 8:21 am

So what are you folks useing for heat in the winter if electricity isnt readily availible? Im considering one of the old school coleman white gas 3k-5k heaters. Ive given serious thought to the P-9000 if I can find 1 used in the spring http://www.dickinsonmarine.com/propane.php or the pet for a little woodstove lol http://www.fatscostoves.com/

I have 2 dog heaters of the Golden Retriever variety. You have to be careful and use a single fuel source. Additional fuel such as hotdog or bacon pieces can cause noxious fumes in the middle of the night, interrupting sleep.

I really like that little Fatsco Pet stove you mention!

I think it was BobHenry who had a sweet little set up where he used a salesman sample wood stove and had an attachment for his door opening. I'm eventually considering doing the same. Definitely need to be careful and do it right though.

Yep it's setting in the corner of my bedroom all blacked up and ready to go!

It will fit the window of my new little 4x7 as I used the exact same dimension and style of window as I did in Chubby.

It will be Shivaree time soon and I will make a special effort to include the little stove for this outing this year. This time I will bring ALL the parts for a good test!

Looks like I am going single to the shivaree, just me and the dogs this winter.
Here are the pics I have of it !

yeah it is a neat idea, the only real concern I have is that well the firebox is tiny, that you only get a few hours of heat out of it, without adding more fuel. The lazyness factor kicks in lol, do I want to wake up cold, try to get it going again or just be cold lol. The propane is nice, had 1 on my first boat and 140 hours on the low setting on a 20lb tank which would roast you out if you didnt open the windows lol. I got lucky last year and got a brand new dickinson diesel heater for my boat shipped to me for $250 dollars on ebay because I guess people werent looking for 1 in august lol.

Suposed to drop down to 30' saturday nite so tryin to figure what to do besides blankets lol. Coleman makes a 1500 btu heater, not vented but I can leave a window open and bring my co detector and see how that works.

It would only be a guess but I would say 90 minutes of burn time. However, once hot it should
keep coals for 2 1/2 to 3 hours giving additional heat and making restarting easy.
I am a light sleeper and up 2 - 3 times during the night
so taking 10 seconds to open the door and drop in a couple
more cubes is no big deal to me.

The only problem I had with the stove was the loud
noise trying to sleep beside me that kept telling me
to not even use it. I won't have that problem this winter
so I will be better able to answer that question soon.
Fuel was a handfull of twigs ( don't tell Mr. Ranger)
and some small blocks of wood about the size of the
colored building blocks we all had as kids. ABC block
sized cubes held the fire best as they had to burn
from the outside in.

For cold weather camping we have learned to preheat
the trailer the night before. With the bedding and walls
and interior surfaces already warm the trailer will heat
up much easier.

Ah yes the candle heater. Here is a good link........

http://www.curbly.com/diy-maven/posts/5443-how-to-make-a-kandle-heetertm

I made one 2 years ago and was quite impressed. ( especially when I stupidly tried to pick up the top pot ) It traps and burns the off gases that would normally escape in the thermal up draft generating higher temps with less wasted fuel.

I just bought a heater for the Westerner TT. I knew I wanted to use propane and also wanted one that would function well above 5000 feet. I looked at Blue Flame heaters, which are nice because they heat the air and give a nice ambiance with the flames showing behind the glass front. In the end I decided on a RV catalytic radiant heater and ended up buying a Olympian Wave 3 Catalytic Safety Heater which can work safely at higher elevations. It is designed to heat a 12' camper can be used as a portable or wall mounted. On the low setting it uses about 1/8 pound of propane an hour. Should get it installed this weekend, I'll give a review on it after I try it out.

I am using an Espar heater that uses the same side wall ports as the AC unit. No problem with exhaust gas. the Pictures are in the album.

One thing that needs to be said is that any internal flame/combustion heater MUST have sufficient ventilation and you should absolutely have a CO detector, or you could be dead!

Along the lines of the little pot belly stove, how about a marine stove? Look at the installation #4 on this page:

http://www.marinestove.com/installation_views.htm

Or do it in an add-on as above.

Catherine

Pricy, of course!
