BBQ competion trailer...Would like to hear your thoughts.

Postby blues brother » Sun Aug 14, 2011 10:52 pm

I have been lurking here for several months...and like what I have seen. You guys are a wealth of info!

Here are my thoughts:

>8.5wX7.5hX24long

>Flat nose...with a twist that I will explain later.

>Ramp rear door.

>8 foot back porch with sides that raise up kinda like concession window on a vending trailer. This is where my smokers will be transported and cooked on. I use Stumps Smokers. They are unique smokers and are very safe. Don't worry about the fire hazard.

>back porch will be walled off from the rest of the trailer. A door will be in this wall. This will give me 16' of kitchen/living space.

>Flat nose with a twist...I will have the manufacturer build a "bump out" on the front of the flat nose. It will be the width of the trailer and from the ceiling down will be about 4'. It will stick out over the tongue about 2'-6". Underneath the bump out I will mount a aluminium truck bed tool box. The "bump out" will will be my bunk( after I add 12 inches of width to the inside).

>I plan on the back 5-6 feet of the inside 16' to be kitchen/prep area. The remaining space upfront will be living/sleeping area. It will also have a shower.( All BBQ comps have porta potties)

> hot water via Eco-temp propane water heater.

> 120v electric to start...12v later(maybe)

> I have a 2004 chev 2500 Duramax diesel that I have pulled a 38' 5th wheel with a 17 aquasport behind(I know its not legal  ).... This 24 footer should be a breeze.

> The ramp will become a back deck.

> side door, passenger side.

> I have a wire welder and can make a real big mess with it in a hurry!

> I have a Bro-n-law that is a dang good carpenter, lectrician and plumber!

> The manufacturer will finish out the back porch with the same metal on the inside that is on the outer skin of the unit. The front inside will be unfinished so I can do my own electrical and plumbing.

> need some advice on holding tanks for the shower and sink. I can spec out that the manufacturer space a section of the floor any width I need to allow for the holding tank. Normal is 16"oc. I was thinking 20" for the tank.

Whew! Sorry for the long post.
All ideas, criticism and support is welcome. I hope to have the unit by mid september so I can cook out of it in october(partially finished, of course).

Thanks in advance for reading and posting replys.

My guess is he wants to build one that wont cost him 20k

My dad has built a few different one's. I'll see if I can find some pictures of them.

I bought my car hauler when we lived in Marietta (briefly). I got it really cheap. I can probably resell it for close to what I bought it for.

Big Pig Jig, I'll bet this guy was there.

I have competed against Myron several times...and have always beat him in a catagory or two. But, he always has beat me in the overall score. He is a good cook!

And yes, I am looking to build a unit under 8k.
The pic vtx1029 is close to my idea. I have some pics that I will try to post soon.

Build it

Postby The Teardrop Nanny » Tue Aug 30, 2011 8:52 am

8) Build it and bring it to the IRG 2012  We love BBQ, especially smoked. Only thing I can say is because of your business, if you plan to stay in your rig, be prepared to have your clothes & bedding carry that smoky aroma around within. And then you have your own brand of cologne, Eau de Smokee, lingering on, but that is mightly attractive to some folks!! Looks like you've got a crew around to help with the build. Keep us posted.

Well, I have not posted any pics of my rig...have had it about a month and work is going a little slow.
Have a stainless prep counter(2) fridge, sink, on demand water heaterand back porch/deck done. Still working on the upper bunk and couch and shower.
I took the weekend off to cook a Chili contest in Thomaston, Ga. Had an awesome surprise...my good friends Larry and Ruth drove from Fort Worth, Tx to surprise me and help cook. We turned in two entries and took 2nd and 3rd place! And yes, there were more than three entries!!
There were 22 teams cooking.
Here is the only pic I have of the inside...unfinished, but usable.

Here we are with our hand made trophies(I am the fat guy with the doo-rag).
