We miss camping!

Postby jstrubberg » Tue Nov 08, 2011 8:43 pm

Howdy from mid-Missouri. My wife and I have spent the last few years getting the kids through college. Between the money squeeze (four year college degrees for triplets!) and the lack of time, most of our camping gear including our 32' RV went the way of the dodo.

Now the kids are a little less enamored about having mom and dad around all the time. We expect that trend to continue, and we are ready to hit the road as a couple instead of a full house!

Teardrops have always intrigued me. With just the two of us, I think we could be very comfortable on our long weekend runs. We typically don't stay more than a night or two in one place, and tearing down and rebuilding a tent camp every night is tiresome.

I'm currently looking at a raod toad/grasshopper style camper. It's not a traditional teardrop, but I like the utilitarian look for behind our Wrangler and the extra headroom and storage will be very handy.

This board is a fantastic resource. I've spent 3-4 hours a day here for the last week, readingh old threads, getting ideas, scrapping them and starting over. I'm a DIY addict, so I will be building from the ground up. After wooden longbows and boats, how hard can it be, right?

So here's to may hours of pestering questions, half-finished Sketchup designs, patience-twisting wiring diagrams and anticipating problems that will likely never occur.

What else is a guy gonna do with his spare time, right?
The more stuff I take along, the more time I spend taking care of my stuff!

Welcome aboard. The grasshopper shape will look great behind your jeep, and you'll be surprised at how roomy that style is. If you go 5x10 you can fit a queen mattress inside!
Take a look at Stomperxj's build if you haven't seen it yet. Lots of great ideas.

I will second Greg, Compass Rose is a 6X10 with lots of room inside. Nancy is just a bit claustrophobic and would have gone nuts is a conventional tear. CR is the second iteration with all the things we did not have in #1.

We too, are empty nesters and are learing to enjoy our own company. The tear drop has proven a great asset for us. We usually stay at a spot for a short while and then move on and a TD works great for this. I also did not want to pull a big trailer or drive an RV. We enjoy the back roads and small is better.

I'm sure that you will be having a lot of fun with whatever trailer you get. The biggest thing is to get out and use it as much as possible.

Welcome to the forum. If you're bored this weekend a couple of teardrops will be at Pershing SP so feel free to come by and camp or just visit.
