Edge moulding

Postby nrody » Sat Nov 12, 2011 10:00 am

On my 1972 Red Dale I have to re-do the aluminum edge molding. At some point someone used something that is hard, almost looks like hot glue. I have a roll of butal tape but I have a few questions. When I remove the existing edge molding and clean up all the gunk that was there from before is butal tape enough to water proof? Will I need slightly larger screws so they do not strip the existing holes? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I used butyl tape under my edge molding and it has worked fine.

As far as the screw holes, using a slightly larger screw may be a great idea.

I was wondering why the water balloon was getting bigger... and then it hit me.

Hot glue

Postby nrody » Sat Nov 12, 2011 11:18 am

Really cant tell if it is hot glue or not. Wharever it is it is a real mess. This task may well be done slow and cautious, it screams can of worms.

Do you have a hot glue gun? You could heat it up, and touch the tip to the "is it hot glue - glue" and see if it melts it. Could be a way of softening it to aid removal. Or for that matter you could use a soldering iron....but probably not a blowtorch!

Goof Off

Postby Alfred » Sun Nov 13, 2011 7:09 pm

Hi All,

(See my pictures below) I'm wondering if it might not be this stuff - which I had to remove from the used windows I used on my camper (it sort of looked like hot glue, too). General consensus from the group was that it was silicone sealant/caulking.

My original thread here: http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=33484&highlight=silicone

If its this stuff, its a mess! But I had good luck with Goof-Off, and elbow grease! But it was hard work removing it.

It really does not look like the stuff on the window. If I was able to figure out how to post photos I would but alias I am challenged with that too. The good news is I got two of the four cushions finished today. Two weeks till Buckskin and making some progress. :)
