Foamie Boat- Update 6/19/12

I'd been looking at that form not really caring for it either. Today I took it back out and added 1X strips to both sides. I think it looks better. What do you think?

Don't know why it was designed that way??? Double checked my mesurements and they were correct. Oh well!

Since I don't have to work tonight, I was able to get a little more done this morning. The Chines are now glued into place. But I hit my first snag with the project. the wale on one side didn't want to make the bend.

Oh well, I'll just have to cut another one tomorrow and try again.
It worked perfect on the other side!

Rosey, try soaking the wood overnight ... or in our case , just leave it outside

Sorry about the break. Hope you can use the pieces in other places instead of them becoming expensive fire wood.

Wolf , around here is "Think or Swim" !!! Experienced evacuees !!! ... water surrounding us on all sides ... Everybody here has a boat ... even me ...

What do you keep for Evac in the desert , a Camel ? ...

Actually around here nobody has really come up with anything we would evac from. Our worst weather is a winter snow storm and you just hunker down and wait it out. I have seen 80-100mph winds and 0 or colder temps. Only lasts about 12 hours. where I am at flooding of biblical proportions just can't happen. Of course there was the Teton Dam in the late 70s but I don't live near a river. Earthquakes? They are over long before an evac is of any use, just hunker down and wait out that feeling the earth is now made of jello. Wild fires..... won't bother me. I live in the middle of irrigated farm land. Nearest dry grass is about 10 miles away. And I have been in some of those fires. Just run into them and jump over the burn line into burned area. This is great sport. Once I was driving an old jeep with the gas tank under the drivers seat, and the tank leaked. Would drive back and forth through the fire line. teenagers. Forest fires? I don't go up there much but they can be a bit of a problem but if you are not a total idiot you usually have plenty of warning. And if I did live in a house next to dry grass I would keep the area cleaned and be ready to light back fires, does wonders, just ask the fire fighters that survived the Mann Creek fire back in the late 1940s.

I guess though I do keep a bunch of drinking water for when the power goes out and my well stops.

It should have worked! It rained all night here Sunday night. I don't know why that one broke and the other 3 went on without a problem. Just have to try again today.

This boat is so cool! When I was a kid we had an aluminum canoe that we used to canoe rivers and sail lakes (my dad set it up with a lateen sail, keel boards on either side, and a rudder in the back, he was the KING of canoe modifications!) Sadly, it was eventually pancaked in a car accident (no one was injured, just the canoe).

My foamy build is back on track, after scrapping the overbuilt floor and buying three new sheets of ply for that. But obviously the next project HAS to be a boat. I don't suppose I can set up a foamy with a sail, but it still looks like great fun!

Rosey , sometimes wood cooperates , sometimes it doesn’t ... a lot depends on the grain and how it was cut from the tree

Todays Update - the broken wale got replaced. It went on with no problems! The bottom runners were ripped. I think I am done with the tablesaw for this project . The bottom edge and chine was sanded smooth (and hopefully flat). Sorry no pictures today, I worked until after dark. If it is not raining tomorrow afternoon I hope to get the bottom glued on and pictures taken.
Randy- the broken wale will work as a runner on the bottom
