How about a flip top roof with some bows and a simple tent ... even something I could make :o It would make it almost 8’ tall inside ... 8)

Love it! Simple to do and would allow the tent to be completely isolated from the elements in the down position. No ugly difficult travel tarp needed.

I made a canopy for my truck with a hard side pop up roof. This design could give more room for smaller trailers. Pictured here:

That is a nice solution. One could have a bigger opening in the top of the trailer for the ladder up and also to act as head room for adults in the trailer below. Maybe 2' which would allow 6' of tent area length up above for the tent "loft".

PS. Checked it Thoroughly for leaks .... nothing apparent ... Inside all done ... :o
You have the door in the back and that can be where you have the ceiling height opening so you can stand up when entering your trailer. On the opposite wall from the trailer door inside you can have the rungs to get to the "loft" If you made it as you showed with the round sided tent then you can have the pivot point of the "roof" where the rungs are so that it is easy to go from the ladder to the platform. You could even have an internal tent fabric wall with a zippered opening to get into the upper loft.

I want one.

I need to take some critical measurements and see if this is possible ... Lots easier to do than a slide out ... Maybe ?

To gain 'head-height' in my CT I fitted a roof top box and moulded it to the outer roof.

Image

but the interior is where I needed the extra height ............ so the inner roof was cut to suit.

Image

the roof top box cover does pop off ...... so I can pass my CT through the garage into the garden for winter storage.

SUG, that would work nicely ....

iSpy , I’ve long admired all the room you created in such a small trailer ... especially the slide outs , which I’m still working on understanding the mechanics of ...

My little CT is a “blank canvasâ€

I’ve already got the mini-galley figured out which would only take up 16â€

SUG , that’s very true ,it does take up space , and I do have a camper top on the Pickup truck allowing for all manner of extra cargo /storage ... But for it’s intended purpose (EVAC) , a small sandwich , coffee, cooler area would surely be appreciated Inside ... After finishing my 4X4X8 Foamie , I did have enough room inside for those little extras... much appreciated on a rainy day ...
The real problem with this CT as a camper is the Width ... If it was 6’ wide it would be Perfect , so the idea of a 2’ slideout seems like a consideration if it could be done simply ... Flip top would be great for standing and feeling roomier , getting dressed... or sitting upright in a folding chair for reading , etc.
Maybe a combination of both ... anything I do will require some structural modifications so might as well do it up right from the start ...
The whole frame is made from 1â€

When I was considering building a truck bed camper, I ran across some plans for a truck bed camper with a slide out galley. Took me a few minutes, but I found the plans (link below). The plans were in a 1979 Mechanics Illustrated magazine. They charge $45 for the plans now, but maybe you can get enough through your library (probably on microfishe) to figure out how it was done without paying for the plans.

Hope this helps.

If I run across a picture of the galley, I'll post a link.

Me too - admiration of design and confusion as to how it works (particularly the slides.)

Just a little drawing on the subject ... Looks like it would be doable , and really solve the space problem ... Now all we have to do is understand how the mechanism works ...
