OMG...I was bad, now with pics!

I've been searching without much luck in the wild. Then, a Coleman model 1 popped up on e-bay, 1923-24. The first Coleman stove and it's got the oven on it.

I kinda had a hunch that it wasn't going to go very cheap, none of them do, but I figured I'd go ahead and make the plunge. I haven't bought anything on E-bay in the last 2 years. I honestly thought it would go for more, but it doesn't have the oven grate for it and needs a bunch of work. I'd bet that's what cooled some of the bidding on it. I've got no problem in doing the work.

Hopefully I've got the grate thing all worked out....just need to try it...a jig and a hydraulic press will make a new one it's a corrugated grid with wings. In the mean time...I've got one from a 2E that will work.

Now to wait and see if I got "stung" or not. 100$ I could have spent a lot of time and effort to find one like this. Not such a bad deal given the prices on Waffle doggers lately....

As a side bar...someone gifted me a 413G the other day....I'll offer it up to someone for the price of the shipping, or pick it up free...just don't have it yet. One of my customers said she'd bring it to the store next time she visits. Doug

I'm afraid to ask...what is your store and where...I'm afraid I'm coming down with a case of Colemanitis....this is scary.

Congrats on your find!!! And yeah, it was expensive, but it's also almost 100 years old and if not working now, will be soon! Waffledoggers are $65 and more, so don't beat yourself up over it. Think of how much money you saved because you were willing to do a bit of work on it yourself instead of just waiting for the 'perfect' restored one to show up on evilbay!

I looked there the other day, then went to Craig's list. Scared myself. I have quite a few irons in the fire and unless a Coleman something bites me, I'm going to try to resist buying it.

But I know I won't be able to fight off Colemanitis forever......

Well...to many it may seem a high price to pay...but a wonderfully restored one went for well over 1K in the last 3 years, thinking it was 1400$.

While that was a special stove, and the Coleman forum members bought it under 1 bidder and gifted it back to the original owner, (they're a lot like the teardrop people)...I feel I'll do more than OK on it at that price.

Someone had to bid it up to that amount, and it wasn't the Coleman forum that did it...(Japan...cough cough)....It's something I'll keep. At the outside, I'll have maybe 200$ + my time into it....I'd think I should triple my investment should I choose to sell it once completed. Doug

Congrats Doug. I am looking for seeing that #1 some time.

The Coleman forum members may have chipped in to buy that one for $1400. But that means there was someone out there willing to pay $1300 + for it.

Doug, congrats on your Win! I will be watching for some intro pics of this one. It's about time for me to pic back up on my gas projects. Rob swung by at the crossroads gathering and tipped me off about a stove at a local shop near McCormick's Creek. Turned out to be a straight 9 Coleman only produced in 1925. A good $25 score. Had it burning in about 10 mins. I believe it is gonna get a proper restoration.
