Newbie from N Cal. lookin for a fast build

Postby bighogman » Fri Sep 23, 2011 10:47 pm

Long time viewer and just making myself known. Sold the big 24 footer and looking for something small. I have minimal spare time so I will have two weekends available to build anything. I was thinking of building a curved 5 by 8 Weekender on a Harbor Freight frame. Any input would be appreciated.

I do appreciate and know the time and effort some of you invest in building teardrops. I have a choice of buying a tent trailer or building a teardrop.

Record build

Postby Alfred » Fri Sep 23, 2011 11:12 pm

Hey BHM,

Mine took about 3 years, so I'm not the one to ask!

Mike gives a good overview on his page about how a Weekender can be built quickly.

I think Deryk built his L'il Vardo in just a few weeks, his build thread is here:

I am interested in the feedback you receive, what is the record build time?

Welcome to the T&TTT group! My vote is for building your own versus a pop-up. Building is fun, and you will end up with a unique camper, and you will be able to tell all the RV'ers, "I built that"!

Keep us posted as to your progress!

B, I just built a benroy type 4x8 on a h freight trailer by myself, took 10 solid Saturdays to get it campable, including spending hours at home depot and the junk yard trying to decide what I needed to buy. All of my lumber, hardware and siding came from home depot. Started in July, finished early September

I had no plans, just built as I went. Depending on your mechanical aptitude and a friend for labor, you can build one relatively fast. Detail can be time consuming. Mine looks good, but not nearly as good as some of the woodies and curvy aluminum clad tears

framing the initial structure is super fast. Finish work and fabrication of mechanical and moving parts takes forever. It is all worth it

Barn to be wild was a 5 weekend build. That was with full electrics, cabinets ,insulation, and interior paneling. They were 11 to 12 hour days with some good helpers thrown in on 3 or 4 of them.

Had I concentrated on just the box, 2 weekends would probably get you primative campable. That's dry, off the ground , and with the help of an extention cord, even electrified.

As stated , the shell is fairly quick. It's the little details that get you bogged down.

Here is the build info with the time stamps to gauge the progress.

I am not detail oriented and I like the basics. I was thinking of plywood siding with no electrical. I just spent 10 hours troubleshooting a computer controlled a/c system on my daughters Lexus. I was an electrical NIGHTMARE. I want to just bolt some D cell battery powered lights to the wall and a portable lantern. In California, we do not need a heater or A/C.

Don't misunderstand me, I appreciate good craftsmanship. I do not have the time, patience or skill to do it. However, I am smart enough to build one.

Bighogman,

Many people here including myself will never finish our TD's.
It will be "campable" before it's completed but you'll be able to use it
anyway. You may change some of your plans after camping in it. Not a bad idea anyway.
