Anyone used LED strips for lighting?

Postby AlexTutt » Wed Nov 23, 2011 12:53 am

I've noticed that some of the guys on my Jeep forum have been using these for rock lights (they illuminate the ground beneath the Jeep so you can see obstacles at night) and thought they would work great for a tear drop, pretty cheap too. They are super bright, easy to install, some of them have 3M tape on the back for even easier installation, and they are really low voltage. You can even get RGB strands with a controller that can change color, seems like it would be great for mood or under cabinet lighting or any lighting really. So has anyone used these? I'm trying to incorporate them incorporate them into my build plans and would love to see how others have.

Here's a link to a few on ebay http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=5050+led+strip+5m&_sacat=0&_odkw=5050+led+strip&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313

I have a 5M RGB strip of the 5050 and a 5M RGB strip of the 3528 LED's, both with the RGB controllers.

They are for my current build, but I won't be ready to install them for a while yet. :(

Have a bunch of other LED's for my new build too. I cant wait to start wiring everything up!!

btw... the 5050's give a much more consistent color throughout the spectrum, but the 3528 give a pretty cool effect too since the red green and blue LED's are separate

I wanted to try them out so I set them up in my apartment temporarily. I'll try to get a vid uploaded so you can see what they look like.

This is the exact 5050 strip that I got....

The RGB controller lets you control the modes - solid color, flashing colors, white strobe, or fade. You can also control the brightness of the solid colors, and the speed of the fade/strobe.

These will be mounted inside my teardrop, facing up in the trolley top section, projecting all the crazy colors onto the white convertible roof. Should be interesting (inside and outside) to say the least.

I have been meaning to ask the same question. I was going to use some neon tubes I scavanged off of a pickup, but I can't find one of them, the other one the insulation is cracked and the wires are shorting out just where they go into the tube, and I heard they are high draw caompared to LEDs. My question is what do I look for (mounting underneath)?
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.

I went all LED on my tear and have two LED strip lights. The upper cabinet in the cabin has a 4 foot strip light mounted inside the top lip. This was the self adhesive flexible kind which I put on a dimmer and provides nice mood lighting. The galley has a 2 foot led strip light on a simple aluminum fixture, also on a dimmer. I was having trouble deciding how much light I really needed so I decided to go with more light and install the dimmers. I think I got both from super bright LEDs.
