Got a Couple Restored

Well after deciding to renovate my garage and having completed it a week or so ago, I'm finally back to my projects. Garage is now insulated, drywalled, new wall cabinets built, new bench and woodworking bench and new toolboxes!! Woot!

I built a blasting cabinet to help with cleaning up the lanterns, always wanted one and now had an excuse to build it. The best part is I had all the parts except the blasting gloves and walnut blast media.

Now on to the lanterns, both were rust buckets before...

Nice work! We have an aluminum oxide blaster at work..I'm not sure I could fit lantern parts in the cabinet, but if I ever get the dang thing apart I may just try...

I would guess aluminum oxide could wreck havoc on brass, why I went with the walnuts shells. Takes a little longer to strip rust but rather than then pitted brass.

My next step is to setup a zinc electrolysis tank for galvanizing collars, cages and stove burners. Need to get a couple more things squared away in the garage to decide where I can setup and how much room I can dedicate to it.

Wasn't planning on using aluminum oxide on the brass. It's in pretty good shape. Some of the other pieces aren't...and may get shipped to a friend to bead blast anyway...IF I can get the dang lantern apart.

I use aluminum oxide on dental gold. If you aren't careful you can blast a hole through it! But it might work well on the silver 'whatever' rusted metal on the lantern. It's pretty pitted anyway in some areas. I'll probably soak it i citric acid, scrub with steel wool, sand it with fine grit sandpaper, use rubbing compound, and see what I have. So far what I have done has worked alright...except getting the air intake off. That hasn't worked at all and may not ever work. In that case I'll scrub, reassemble, and see if it works. If not..then I don't know. Maybe just save it for the few salvagable parts?

Sorry I was refering to if I ever used it on a brass fount.

I had an air intake stuck on another one I am doing. Provided the tank is empty and completely dry, I applied a small amount of heat using a small butane torch to the brass. I took just a little bit and it broke free instantly. As soon as it moved just a tiny bit, I applied PB Blaster to lubricate and it came right off.

Might try that torch...hadn't thought of that. I emptied the tank, but who knows if it's completely dry yet. The torch is at work, so the fuel will probably be dry by the time I go back and sneak the torch out of the office anyway.
