Log burners

Over here in the UK campsites don`t let you have open camp fires. The solution? a closed campfire made from old calor gas bottles. I am currently building number 3( that looks like an old ww2 uxb sticking out of the ground) but here are the first 2...

I've got an old propane bottle rusting out by the barn that I've thought of doing something like that with, just haven't made the time.

with the clean flame burn you have coming out of the third one have you ever thought of putting a circular pipe on the flue to rob some more of the heat? sort of like the Russian fireplace concept.

That is so cool. When the fire is out, close it up, tote it home and dispose of the ashes.

In the States we would know them as Chimineas. They are traditionally made in Mexico of terracotta. They are an old style of outdoor fireplace that have become popular in the backyard.

Your stoves are pretty cool. The top blue one lookd like you could make coffee on top and the bottom one with the fins looks like it would radiate heat well. Very nice.

We've got a guy here in Colorado that's made one of those. I've been planning to make one for several years now, just haven't ever got around to it.

Those are cool Bruce! I have a question. How do you make them safe to cut and weld? I have one buy never had the guts to cut it open with my grinding wheel. I am afraid (with my luck) I would blow my self up!!!!!!
Thanks!
Jason

I was wondering the same thing with I saw Andy's setup so I asked him about it. He took the valve off and blew compressed air in before he did any cutting. He used a jigsaw with a metal blade to cut the doors. His tank is upside down with the valve opening pointing down. He's got a metal tube in the valve opening that he would connect to a blower when starting the charcoal.

Cheers guys. Yeah, we call them chimineas too but they are wayyy to expensive to buy. I had a clay one but the frost got to it and it shattered.
The blue one was in fact designed to boil a kettle or cook on.
The large black one was built for the inlaws.
The "bomb" was just a bit of fun, the base is designed to be buried in the ground so it looks like it has just fallen, especially with the smoke/flame out of the flue!

The valves are easy to remove, just burn as much gas out as possible using a stove. The using a BRASS drift (no sparks) and hammer unscrew the valve. i then stand it upside down for a few days as gas is heavier than air. i then fill it with water and leave for a few hours then turn it over to drain out.
Although the gas is gone the smell is still there. Then simply draw on what you want and cut it out.

i knew the basics of welding but taught myself by building these burners.
All you need is a mid range welder and some time to play ( and a pile of scrap metal to play with)

I'm with you Got to learn that skill - Our local Community College offers it and you need to pass a SAFETY CLASS first. But the price is well worth it.............

Sounds like a winter project is brewing.....

I like the blue tank design, and seen similar makes on the internet after searching. May as well have a hot plate on the top to warm water, or coffee, or cook off the top!

This caught my eye at the last rally. Owner converts it to use gas or wood. Fires it up at night as a wood heater, gas cooker by day.

Warning! There is a process of expelling all propane fumes before cutting into the tanks! After reading a few DIY tips, removing the valve, drilling a hole, and filling it with water displaces any fumes left in the tank.

edit: Oops! I guess I didn't read the previous how to empty tank comments.
