They were clamp on hitches. Two Pieces of steel with a bolt in-between. I have one from my 1940 Ford Club Coupe that my grandfather used to pull his 1937 Ford Coupe Circle Track Car during the 40's.

Looks like this....

You realize this was from a time where bumpers were real pieces of steel bolted to a full frame.

One like this.

Here's the hitch set up I'd like to get a better look at.

I've only seen this briefly in a few scenes from Lucy & Desi's movie "The Long Long Trailer".

Its a totally extra set of suspension.

Obviously the forerunner to the "Equalizer Hitch"

I remember something like that, way back when I was just a sprout, ie pesky kid in the 50s-60s. But it was on a single axle trailer maybe 15 foot long. I can't remember much more about it other than there was at least one little wheel upfront and coil spring suspension.

I sure wished I had that trailer today. It was built with amazing workmanship. Was probably from the late 30s, early 40's. We used it for a number of years for labor housing and a few times we stayed in it herding sheep. But it lived a hard life with farm workers living in it.

:(
