Need a good flashlight ?

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Thanks! I'm going to check into those. We don't have streetlights here, so if we are outside in the evening (cooking in the DO!) it would be helpful to have a headlamp! I see a lot of people using them when walking dogs in the early morning, too.

I've been using headlamps for decades! First for winter camping in Minnesota...yes, in the snow...sub-zero...not in cabins with heaters :)

Short days and long nights so headlamps are SOP.

One thing that you learn really fast is where to aim the light. It needs to be aimed down a bit or when you look a friend in the face they get 'flashed' and blinded. There goes any hope of night vision!

My best headlamp is an earlier model of the Petzl 5.

Black Diamond is another quality mfgr.

So is this the way to go to mod a 4D Maglite?

When I was in NC, Cree had a fab near ours. Some folks went there after they closed ours. Cree was one of the first ones to develop blue and white LEDs. They've been at the forefront of LED technology, which is why they use their name as a selling point. Interesting note is that they also make synthetic diamonds.

Some nice Fenix flashlights here: http://www.fenixlight.com/newping.asp?classid=1

And if you happen to own a Fenix, and want to turn it into a Lamp for camping, get this attachment!

Great Honk!

Just how many different models of flashlights does a company need to have to totally overwhelm a person?

Me, I like the free ones from Harbor Freight. I don't plan on chasing scoff laws about town, nor spot lighting deer, my caving days are long gone, and if i show some young honey my equipment I would not think about showing my flashlight.

Still Loving my Coleman Bubba Flashlight .... use it every night out here in the dark woods , still on the same batteries ...

And speaking of batteries , seems not all batteries are the same ... When changing flashlight batteries on the many others we have , noticed there’s always one cell that tests out lower Vs than all the others ... :o Usually replacing just that one brings new life to the flashlights... Small battery tester comes in handy and saves battery coin in the long run ... No use throwing away good batteries away with the weak , just because the flashlight dims a bit ... Test those old batteries , you’ll be surprised ... :o

I just picked up a small LED flashlight at Home Depot this morning, (while shopping for furnace parts and pieces!)!

It's a Coast PX45.

http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R ... key=Search

It's pretty nice, with 212 lumens. I'll see if I can find a way to do a test and show you the difference, tonight when it gets dark.

Meanwhile, I've been using it all morning, and it's very nice, the right size for working in small areas.

Though rechargables are nice, they will slowly go flat over time. I hate picking up a flashlight only to find it dead. There are supposed to be some new ones that don't, but I haven't tried them. I keep alkaline batteries in mine, they are relatively cheap, and they will stay on standby for a really long time.

At the last IRG, I forgot to bring any lights. Much to my surprise the fluorescent lantern was still good after being inside the teardrop since day one.

Those mag-lites will put a knot on someone's head for sure, and when the po-po comes you tell 'em you was just out looking fur your car keys or something.

Where as your carrying a billy club the police think you're out looking for trouble.

I got my new toy today. 'Wow, that was fast shipping...

It sure looks pretty aggressive... But how aggressive is it really? Lets find out

On the top is a two D cell maglite with the old style bulb. Hmmm, the battery seem dim on this. I'll recharge them tomorrow and try again tomorrow night.

Meanwhile the middle picture is the 200 Lumen LED flashlight from Coast.

And on the bottom is the 1000 Lumen upgrade in my 4D Cell Maglite.

Mike...

P.S. To be fair to the old style light bulb, I'll post another pic tomorrow night.
