Picked up a better stove

Postby kzhorse » Sat Dec 03, 2011 2:05 pm

Well I got this at a flea market for $10 so I can work with this one.
May of 1969 and another guy had a old can of CF for $1.

So how old do you think the fuel is?

I'm guessing late 70's-80's. The can looks really familiar to me...I probably have one up in Nevada City with my stove and lantern.

There is most likely a bar code on it, and it has a few nice government warnings on it because some folks can't figure out that gas is flammable.

Check out any fine print...there could be a date hidden, for image copyright, etc.

Great finds!!

Is there a bar code? I am now thinking that the white dot above the lantern, etc. is not the moon, like I first assumed (just thought it was part of the picture) but instead it's where they used to stamp the price with the purple ink price guns..because a price sticker could go anywhere and be visible.

So that would make it earlier..late 60's, very early 70's (remember when scanners came into the grocery stores? Alpha Beta had the first one in the SF area: 1976) UPCs were put on more commonly used items first, and it wasn't law to have them for awhile after...but they started putting them on about 74 or 75 to get ready for the big changeover.

Dang that can looks familiar. Now I really need to know when it's from....

There is a zip code, so not 50's.

Just looked on ebay and there are a few on there. One says 50's-60's. It has to be after the mid 60's, generally speaking, so have a zip code. Very few places had zip codes before that.

I'm saying late 60's to about '72.

No wonder it looks so familiar. We had those with us when we were camping all over NorCal and southern Oregon as kids!

That would be a cool can to refill, if it is sound, and take with you in the tear...if you wanted a more vintage look to your setup. Makes me think I may just have to buy one of these cans since I've got the 70's thing going on at my camp!

I wonder if the formula for the older fuel had a higher octane? Nice stove you found...that's a runner now! For garage salers....if they have Coleman stuff, always, always, ask if they have any fuel for it also...chances are they probably do and they'll just give it to you. Doug

I saw a nice stove that I may go back and get...still undecided. I went on ebay to check prices and it looks like it's a fair deal.

Meanwhile I was about to hit 'buy now' on an item but decided to asd the seller a question...and saw there was a listing for an identical item for $10 more..and in that minute he decided to raise the price $10 and add another photo! It wasn't another item, he had updated it at that exact time while I was looking! Crud!

It's Coleman, but nothing anyone here would want. It's a propane 5418-708. Avocado green. Single burner stove. It would look great with my 79 Grasshopper. I'm hauling small propane cans anyway for my cooktop and some lanterns, so why not? Still want a 502, but thought the 5418 would be a real user.

I'm going to start hitting garage sales for camping stuff. Good tip on the fuel Doug!

Ya know.....you can always pick up any old 413 and do a harvest gold or avocado paint job on them to match what'cha want. 413G's are fair game...millions of them around and nothing special about them, unless it's a gold bond. I do custom paint on quite a few...so what if someone says "it's not original!". Doug
