Filling gaps in your trailer.

Postby goramsey » Tue Dec 06, 2011 10:26 am

Has anyone ever filled gaps in there trailer with a product called Great Stuff! It sounds pretty good to me. I could use it to plug small areas to keep out mice, wind, etc.

Never used it in a trailer, but use it around the house all the time whenever there is a gap to be filled. Most interesting time was when I unknowingly sealed a coupled of chipmunks in a void that I found in my mother-in-law's house. About 24hrs later there were bits of Great Stuff foam all over the place. You could tell that the plug of foam had been destroyed with great prejudice. :D

I used it to fill gaps in the insulation, areas where I couldn't get the rigid foam board. I shot it, let it set, then trimmed as needed before covering with the outer skin.

If the hole is large enough for mice to enter, and mice were a potential concern... Stuff some steel wool into the opening. The foam sealants could be used as a backer to seal air gaps.

I've used it at home. You have to be careful, because it really expands and can cause a bowing of say, a door frame. Then the door sticks.

Another use for it, is to use around something you are shipping. I had an axe to mail so wrapped the head in plastic and Great Stuffed around it. It took a couple days to cure, but the recipient of the axe said it could have been dropped from 24000 feet without any damage.

It can be Great Stuff.

Great idea Stumphugger. I often mail fragile things cross country to my grandkids and never would have thought of that.

 If you are concerned about over-filing they make a low expansion foam just for the purpose. lots of people have used it to fill in the edges of insulation!

I'm wondering if she thought your ears were full of foam since we men have this nack of tuning out what we don't want to hear. ;)

One of the oddities of Great Stuff is that is takes a small amount of moisture to cure. I used to work for a company that used it to seal peltier thermoelectric chips in place with it. The only issue was that it was being injected into an enclosed space. To ensure is properly cured, we had an actual engineering drawing for the piece of paper toweling that had to be cut to fit the space between the four chips, and then a specified amount of water was applied to the toweling before the unit was assembled. After assembly, the foam was squirted into the space and allowed to flow out as it expanded and cured. I have had to use this trick a couple of times when using Great Stuff to make packing for larger items.
