RE: What's a Vardo?

Hi Vedette,

What we call Vardos are modern versions of the old gypsy horse drawn
living waggons as seen in the UK. Or, more correctly, they are TTTs that
look like, or have the shape of the old vardos. There are 4-5 styles or
types of them - Bowtop, Reading and Ledge come to mind offhand.

There are several web sites on them if you Google the word.
I read on one site that a vardo like trailer/caravan body on a 'modern
style' single or tandem axle frame/chassis is called a "Whoppee wagon"
by the gypsies themselves, or at least they were in the 1950s.

Here's some sites;

RE: the originals

Here a SCA enthusiast has made one:
http://www.enslin.com/rae/gypsy/vardo01.html

This is about Shepherd Huts, similar but very simple":
http://gypsywaggons.co.uk/features-shepherds-huts.htm

This isn't about Vardos, but rather Modern Gypsy Caravans[TTs],
the term 'over the top' comes to mind:

Here a TD builder is now building a Reading/Ledge Style Vardo, check
out the links for his photos, also search the tinyhouseblog site for
'Vardo; or 'Gypsy' and you'll find a few moire:
http://tinyhouseblog.com/tiny-house-con ... more-18046

This is to a site of a UK builder of gorgeous modern ones on modern
caravan chassis:
http://www.gregsgypsybowtops.co.uk/default.html

These people built a very basic one for a cross -country trip:
http://www.whittleddown.com/search/label/gypsy%20wagon

This is for a similar German wagon. a Schaefer/sepherd's wagaon;
http://www.schaeferwagen.de/

A couple forum members have built them;Steve Cox and Deryk the Pirate.
look up their build threads, I don't have them handy at the
moment. And there are some other threads discussing them also.

Sorry I got carried away with the links! They're just very interesting!

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

I too, have been dreaming of Vardo's... and tears, and canned hams, and ...!
Years ago I acquired a free trailer chassis of an older 15' TT that I rehabbed into a 12' utility flatbed. Haven't used it for utility for a while, so I'm thinking it would be a good platform for a camp trailer project.

Thanks memzo for the inspiring links.

This is one that I really like... paleotool vardo
