Building a 5ft wide tear on a 4ft wide trailer?

Postby slickG » Sun Dec 11, 2011 6:43 pm

Starting the build of a teardrop from use next June, FL to WA, want a 5ft wide interior but am using the 4ft wide HF trailer, can I just built it 5ft wide as long as the base is at the same height as the fenders?...question make sense?

Absolutely! You're only talking 6" on each side, you can frame that up plenty strong.

You can build it a variety of ways too. You could build the wheel wells inside if you wanted it to be frame level, and put a skinnier mattress, and you will still have the extra interior room to maneuver, and have some side storage, and will make it easier to change the sheets too. Just another thought!

Sure you can! Thats exactly what I'm doing. Built up the deck using 2x4's, so my bed will be over the wheels, and large enough for a queen size mattress.

I built a 5 wide too. The wheel wells will be about 4-5 inches high and 6 inches wide to clear the tires with axel under springs. If you put the axel over the springs your wheel wells will be higher. Zack's method is cool because he will preserve bed space and headroom. I actually built under bed storage so I sacrificed 5" of my 4 foot interior, but I can live with a thin mattress.

Here's one built 5x9 and 5' tall. That's the nice thing about these trailers. You can build them the way you want.

Good Luck

Not mine, it's Harvey's "Nobody". 5ft wide on a 4ft HF frame.

You can also widen the HF frame if you want wheels and fenders on the outside with out interference inside.

The axle was widened and angle iron used to make the carrier.

I used the HF frame with 8" wheels and made the inside 5 feet wide.

If I were doing it again I would make the frame a little wider. I would like to put 12" wheels on it but can't, because they rub the wooden frame
