Sorry I did not see this earlier Mike.. they are a nice step.. part way between a regular mountain bike... and that of a Fat Bike.

My snowcat rims came in today... They are really heavy. Exactly 2# each.

Glenn, how much do those wheels on the pugsley weigh?

But I'm not looking for a speed demon. I'm looking to play in the snow. So these should be fun!!!

I've got some polypro on the Christmas list, so hopefully that keeps the humidity down.

Next project is the outer shell.

oops sorry no that is the bare rim weight.. I don't have the wheel weights.. there are a lot of variables there.

Surly has many rims available now also.. hmm 3 versions of the large marge.. different versions of the rolling Daryl as well as the clown shoe.

the snowcat rims used to be considerably lighter than fat bike rims... but they have made lighter fat bike rims in the last couple of years.. but you are talking about rim widths of 65mm up through to 100... vs your at 44.

Snowcats are nice if you want to maximize tire width/flotation on a conventional bike and with regular tires. They aren't as fat as fat bikes but they don't require a bunch of specialized (and spendy) parts either!

Anyways, my TS2.2 came in today, and I promptly trued up one of my bad wheels.

This weekend (I hope) I am going over to my XC racing buddy's house and build up the snowcats. If not this weekend, then it'll after Christmas. I've never build up a wheel from scratch before, and no amount of you-tube movies can convince me to try it alone. And I've seen some good ones.

This weekend (I hope) I am going over to my XC racing buddy's house and build up the snowcats. If not this weekend, then it'll after Christmas. I've never build up a wheel from scratch before, and no amount of you-tube movies can convince me to try it alone. And I've seen some good ones.

I started wheel building WAY before youtube.. and personal computers

I recommend the book. "The Bicycle Wheel" by Jobst Brandt

That's the book that Bob is going to bring in for me to read.

Now that I got the side to side stuff figured out, next I am going to work on the roundness thingie. Gotta take the tire off for that though.

And if I can figure out that, then I gotta double check the tension thingie. Hopefully without a tension meter.

Bob is busy this weekend, so we won't be building until after Christmas.

the tricky part is sort of doing the side to side.. up and down.. and tension all at once.

It is relatively easy to get a wheel straight and round.. but straight and round with the tensions equal is another matter [equal excluding the differences for dished wheels.

I will use a tension meter for measuring the ultimate tension.. but I use sound during the build process. Plucking spokes to check for high and low tension.. while adjusting for left to right.. and roundness.
