First teardown - Wife's BDay 200A - COMPLETE

Well, started my first rehab of a 200A. This one is my wife's BDay lantern, I plan to do a full restore of it. Sure I'll be asking a lot of questions!

I'll be watching your progress..I discovered today that I need to tear down my 200a. I'll go by the 'oldcolemanparts.com' tutorial and I'm hoping it's easier that my 220f.

How's the resto going??

I went out to light my 502 and my 200a. The valve wouldn't turn on the 200a..it did when I bought it, don't know what changed, except it must have corroded/rusted or something in the 5 weeks that I've owned it. I couldn't open the valve to light it..so I need to tear down that one too.

I've decided to put the 220f back together and see if it lights. Then I'll go back and concentrate on the 200a.

It doesn't seem to hold pressure, either. It has fuel in it now, so if it's just a dry leather cup, then it should be fine and I won't replace the pump. But the stuck valve isn't any fun. 2 lanterns and right now I can't light either one!

Good to hear you picked well the first time...not to bash anyone but I'm not too keen on the plural wives thing...and it's always nice to hear of a couple that stays together for the long haul!!

I guess I'll treat this like my trailer build thread. If you all don't mind.

I stripped the old paint, repainted it, cleaned up the brass parts and the cage. I used the VHT paint on the cage in order to get the clean look I was after. I am letting it cure a bit, then I'll add the new sticker to the fount. After the sticker is on, should I shoot it with clear-coat or is a good wax enough?

Then it will be time to put it back together and pressure test. The fuel tank threads were a little bunged up, I cleaned them as best I could, bought a new cap, hope it seals correctly!

I canned (cannibalized) a direction disc from one of my other 200A lanterns, those buggers are hard to find! Even over on the Coleman board. I hope to come across one soon enough.

How are your two going? Get them to hold pressure? Interested to know what the cause was, as a rookie in the lantern game, I need to learn as much as I can. Lessons learned on one lantern can prove very helpful when fixing another. That is why I like our T&TTT forum so much, people share openly. And it appears the same goes for the Coleman Forum.

I have to be honest...I haven't mounted the bench vise. I'm hoping that might get done today. I've been kicking around the strap wrench idea. Going to check on it, but will probably take apart what I can on the 220 today and start blasting it with pb blaster...but I think I know what is going on and I'm not sure that will reach the varnish on the other end of the threads. But it won't hurt to pb blast it anyway.

Fantastic job on the stripping and repainting. That lantern sure was rough! Gives me hope that I can rehab mine. The Dam is getting closer..only 5 months to procrastinate, so I'd better make a move soon!

What did you do for suspending the fount for the paint..a dowel? I like the idea of painting out on the lawn...if it gets painted, it will grow out. Thinking of driving some rebar into the lawn and doing it that way. Thought of the dowel on the vise and realized there will be overspray everywhere...

Yep, my paint stand is a dowel, but I attached them to some scrap plywood, and set in on my saw horse to paint. Worked out very well.



Saw this valve wrench on ebay.......might be an option for those hard to get valves
