Here's a story that is flowing for me with the USPO.

Last week I found an '89 Toyota/Uhaul box truck on Craigslist. On Monday morning at about 10 amI put a cashier's check in an Express/overnight envelope. The envelope should have been in Tampa the next day. When it didn't turn up the seller and myself started tracking.

This is the current...from yesterday...status:

Depart USPS Sort Facility, December 21, 2011, HONOLULU, HI 96820
Processed through USPS Sort Facility, December 21, 2011, 8:44 am, HONOLULU, HI 96820
Processed through USPS Sort Facility, December 20, 2011, 1:42 am, AUSTIN, TX 78710
Acceptance (APC), December 19, 2011, 9:59 am, AUSTIN, TX 78704

I would have thought that the quickest and shortest route from Austin to Tampa would have been on a more easterly track...I dunno!

Sue they will have a Job - you see its all from a different angle - You see the story will go something like this: there was some punk sitting on the front porch with a camera in hand , giving him the bird (the delivery guy) - then asking him to toss the box to his friend who is just out of camera range - I'm sure THAT's how it all went down, right???

At least Fed Ex and UPS are "delivering". I bought something off of EBay and it was shipped via the USPS.

Here's the progress to date:

Acceptance
2011-12-12, 09:22:00, FORT LAUDERDALE, FL 33351

Processed through USPS Sort Facility
2011-12-13, 16:19:00, JACKSONVILLE, FL 32099

Processed through USPS Sort Facility
2011-12-23, 10:31:00, OPA LOCKA, FL 33054

So, it's taken 11 days to go from Fort Lauderdale to Miami which is not even in the right direction. No wonder they're going under. At least Fed Ex or UPS would have gotten it here by now.

Contrast the USPS performance above with UPS performance below. A similar EBay purchase that got delivered!!! 4 days to deliver a package from Virginia to So.Cal. USPS 11 days and package hasn't left Florida. USPS deserves to go under.

Cheers,

Gus

I've had very good luck with USPS and priority mail.

Their tracking, however, is the worst thing I've ever tried to use. It's not uncommon for me to receive a package two to three days before the tracking updates and shows delivery.

I wish USPS would get their act together!

We were out at a mall yesterday and I saw a UPS driver putting packages in her truck. She made the You Tube videos circulating look like bush league! She was THROWING the packages into the back of her truck versus tossing them in.

Here is the latest from the USPS on my purchase from Florida. I'm curious as to why my package took 11 days bouncing around in Florida, then to Santa Clarita (which is pretty close to Simi Valley) and then to Santa Barbara (which is in the opposite direction from Santa Clarita to Simi Valley) and then to Simi Valley. Maybe I'll see it today.

UPS delivered a similar package from Virginia in 4 days. USPS 17 days!

Cheers,

Gus

The USPS expects to lose about $7 billion this year. The post office already has borrowed roughly $13 billion from Uncle Sam. At the end of 2009, USPS had $33.5 billion in outstanding liabilities and another $54.8 billion in unfunded retiree health and pension obligations.

Apparently not enough packages to even come close to breaking even. The USPS is broken.

If you are familiar with the geography of Southern California, Santa Barbara is a tough place to get to from Santa Clarita (which is on I5 and I5 is the major North/South hwy in California) as the only way there is up the Pacific Coast Highway from Ventura/Oxnard so putting some sort of a sorting hub there makes no sense. The Ventura/Oxnard area also has 3.5 times the population of Santa Barbara so one would figure that more mail goes there than Santa Barbara making it a better hub/sorting location. I, for one would like to see how they do things and how their operation could be streamlined. They can't be as dumb as they appear, but from their performance and routing they leave a lot to be desired.

Cheers,

Gus

They aren't dumb. But the Internet has changed everything.

The reason I asked how many packages were delivered in good time is...

It's been my experience that people tend to forget the good service and obsess about the one bad delivery. I've had people complain to me about a letter that wasn't delivered on time SEVEN years ago. They just can't let it go.

Yes, the USPS is going down and we will miss it. You'll see.

I may be a little prejudiced here as my husband is a rural mail carrier.

He makes a decent living, not a great one. After 30 years, he has a decent retirement, not a great one. He works hard for his customers. He's spent many 10-12 hour days around this time of year slogging through snow and bad roads, coping with breakdowns, etc., and there's no unauthorized overtime paid. Pay is based on a biannual mail count.

The USPS is throttled because it cannot act on its own to run a profitable business. It requires the action of congress to allow an increase in postage rates. (Don't get me started on THIS incompetent congress! Talk about a waste of taxpayer money, and we'll be paying them far more than the hardworking people in the USPS) The USPS is a government agency created to provide a service to all people with an address in this country.
Millions of pieces of mail are, for under 50 cents, delivered from one house/business to another 3 miles, 30 miles, 300 miles or 3000 miles away.

Give them a break. And, like Rebapuck, be careful what you wish for.

OK, off my soapbox.
