T/D Body weights

Newguy here,I have a HF folding trailer that has a rating of 970 lbs What is the weight of the average T/D body.I dont want to overload the trailer.I am thinking about 8x4 and wont be carrying much in the TD.Thanks for the great web site.

Now THAT is a loaded question ! Since MOST TDs are unique and of "special" construction, an average would seem near impossible to come up with.

Rolly Nelson has a TD that weighs in at 420 lbs ! TOTAL ! Whereas my trailer weighs in at 820 lbs( total)

I couldn't tell ya what the body weighs by itself.

Jus do yer research on these forums and come up with a design and materials that suit YOU and BUILD !

The final weight of my 4x7 ( actually 7"-6" ) was 525 pounds. The frame weighed 195 ( 180 after a little surgery) making the body around 345 pounds. The build has 3/4 osb floor, 7/16 fiberglass faced osb sides, and FRP roof attatched to 2x2's at 12" o/c. The outer shell is FRP as well. The roof is insulated the full depth of the 2x2 (1 1/2") with polyisocyanurate foil faced foam and the sides and floor are 3/4 closed cell blue foam. Electrical is simple A/C only

Thanks guys.You answered my question.It looks like I can build a T/D on my trailer without worrying about weight.Probably a TY-DEAN look a like.Might save some gas pulling with our Jeep Compass over The RAM pick up and 4000+ Puma trailer.

I think "without worrying about weight excessively" would be a better statement. You can, quite easily, build a trailer that exceeds 970lb loaded.

So you still need to look at each part as you make it and say to yourself "how thick/heavy does this need to be?". Every time you say "I'll just use a bit of 3/4" ply - it's easier", your trailer will get heavier.

ABSOLUTELY ! Every nut,bolt,screw, and piece of wood will ADD weight to yer trailer...these tiny trailers are "minimalist" trailers.

Don't fergit.. ya gotta have clothes,food,cookin utensiles,chairs... and a DUTCH OVEN ! Talk about weight !
