Full Resto 413F ( new pics 1-1-12)

Lanterns, stoves, etc... anything old!

Hammered paint isn't available in high temp....the high temp paint you want Slow is Rustoleum high temp silver. In my opinion...it looks the best...it's kind of a flat light gray paint. Some of the high temp silvers get sort of a gloss to them and they aren't as fuel resistant as the Rustoleum. Shake them up well and often... Just my opinion.

True high temp paints aren't available in rattle can except in a very few colors, and they are all flat paint. Automotive stores may have some header paint that will come in other colors. There are others available, but they get stupidly expensive and are more of like an industrial coating IE for disk brakes etc....

For built in ovens on older Coleman stoves, the engine block enamels are available and they have a decent gloss to them. They are only good to 500F though. I did up an oven with it...you gotta run it through a couple of heat cool cycles to make it a "bakable" oven though. Early on, they are smokers!

Dragonfire....make sure you really pad your lantern fonts. I use foam rubber and a strip of the shelf liner to grip the base of it. Don't crank the vise down too tight as it will distort the font. Make sure you keep the bail out of the way...don't ask me how I learned that one...Doug

That's just all my opinions though....

Thanks for the tips, Doug. Is it ok to use the hammered silver Rustoleum on the frame of the 220? Or on any of the silver parts? I think that's what Kirk was doing when he had a lantern that was pretty rough still.

I'm hoping I can get this lantern functional and not horrible to look at. I'm not giving up. The fount may get shipped to a friend for some blasting if I can't get it done locally.

Repainting founts with rattle cans...is there a color close to the Coleman green? If I get this one apart and get the air clog fixed and it lights, I want to re-do the fount. More paint came off when I was giving it the bb treatment. I guess I could always 'Christmas' it if there isn't a good green.

The frames were originally in a cadmium plating....the regular VHT silver is probably your best bet. The frame will more than likely get too hot for the hammered finish and it wouldn't look that great anyway as the surfaces are too small for it to have that good "hammered" finish. Hammered paints look best on larger flat surfaces.

Rustoluem has 2 different acceptable colors if that's what brand you are using. 7738 Hunter green which is a great match for the older Coleman green. 7733 Dark Hunter green is a good match for the newer Coleman green. Either will work on stoves or lanterns.

I'm sure that others know this, but it might be worth repeating...shake the can really well, make sure it's a good temp...and just to make sure it's shaken well. Hold it in an upright position and twirl it so that the marble will run around the bottom of the can. If it doesn't run freely and you can hear it run around...it's not shaken enough. Kirk is the paint guy though. Just my ideas on it.

I thread a tapered dowel in the valve joint in the top of the fount, with the brass removed...kinda screw it into the threads, it should be really solid...it gives me a great handle to spray the fount so that it can be completely painted without resting on something. After I shoot it, clamp the dowel in a vise to let it cure. I don't do the oven heating thing, but might put it close to the wood burning stove in the garage to speed up the curing. A cork in the pump sleeve too! I tape over the top of the fuel filler and the threads on it. Doug

re: 'Rustoleum'...it has the rust inhibitor or whatever, but I know it's not the only game in town. Tell me what rattle cans are good for Coleman colors and I'll find it somehow. If I can't, I'll get something on the list I can find.

I'm guessing by 'new' and 'old' Coleman greens you are probably calling anything 50's and newer 'new'..I do not know when Coleman changed their green. I'm guessing my lantern (71 or 2) would be 'new'.

VHT silver...rattle can? Tell me more. Auto parts store?

Any Ace or TrueValue hardware should have these colors, greens as well as the high temp silver. HD has them as well. Sorry, I can't remember when the color changed....but I'm thinking, mid 70's....it's darker.

I've found that these colors and paints work really well. There are tons of other rattle cans that will give you good results though. If you haven't done this type of thing before...remember...don't scratch up the base with too aggressive of a sand paper on it. Scratches will show. I use paint stripper to remove the original paint...scuff the metal with like 220...spray some primer if you want, they didn't do it originally...scuff that a bit with like a scotchbrite or a 320...then paint. You can shoot paint directly over the steel...they did it. I like the primer...helps to hide flaws. Primer can hide scratches like down to 100 grit...paint won't. It really needs a smooth surface with some "tooth". Doug

I've done some rattle can painting before, but I want this to look good.

I may kill some time tomorrow at an ACE on El Camino and see what I can find.

I have primer. I have hammered in gold for my old trailer. I have lots of rattle cans for various projects, but no Coleman-type green. And tons of sandpaper. Let's just say a drawer full. And not a small drawer.

Thanks for the info. I'll check it out and maybe the good thoughts will make that 220 come apart really easily this weekend!

do you know what red is right?

I'm logging this into my iphone. Just in case. You never know when you need to know what paint to buy for a new-found part of the collection!

Rustoleum 7762 Sunrise red....looks great. I did up like 6 lanterns for giveaways at the last IRG using that. I like the rustoleum as it gives a nice gloss on it.

We maybe need to schedule some sort of a "mid-winter" workshop for here in the Sac area. Do a couple of lantern/stove tear downs, if temps permitted, spray some paint. Could be a fun thing to do. Doug

DragonFire wrote:He's talked about using the hammered look silver on lanterns, too. But I don't know if that was high temp. I'll have to look through some of the posts to find out what it was. I bought a vise last night and will finally get to wrenching on the 520 this weekend. I'll do the warm citric acid bath then spray it when it's dry.

Hopefully Kirk didn't freeze to death in his tear last night...Or asphyxiate himself lighting a few lanterns in there.

Maybe he's just working on his build.

Or on CCF again, ignoring us.

I survived the drive way camp. And yes I have been working on the trailer. It is complete. A few tiny things to round up but its finished as far as I am concerned.

That stove looks great Kirk! Nice job.
Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? Ask yourself these simple questions every time you are in doubt about any action.
