If you were going to buy a digital SLR type camera which one would you buy.?

Canon, the best one you can afford. There are tons of lenses and accessories for them and they make a great product. With that said, I started with Olympus and wish I had not. But I have 2 expensive lenses now so I am not changing. I will be upgrading to a new body soon, the E-5.
This is just my opinion,others may vary.

What kind of budget do you have Steve?

I like Canons, and their entry-level DSLR with a 18-55 image stabilized kit lens is about $800 through the end of next week at B&H.

Any cheaper price than B&H is very likely a SCAM.

I love my digital rebel. Can't go wrong with one of those!

And if you don't want to buy new, the used ones are pretty affordable on ebay.

Seriously, you won't go wrong with either the Canon or Nikon or even Sony line of DSLRs.

I have found great bargains at some pawn shops. I have had Nikons, Olympus, Canon, Pentax and Sony DSLRs. I personally prefer the Nikon and Canon brands for varying reasons.

But good, even great pictures can be made with only a point and shoot if you have an eye for pictures.

Started with a Olympus because it was a gift... When it died I went to a Sony A300 (DSLR - 10 megapixel), on advice from my sister and her son.... Wished I had not.... The Sony's are a "consumer" product that used to be Minolta... Minolta SLR's were very good Cameras... THE SONY is a very good camera for intended use... Its DSLR "snapshot" camera not intended for "professional" level shooting.... And accessories are very limited.... IF I had it to do over... A Canon or a Nikon ....

Don't take this as total negative against the Sony... IT is a ok camera... I just think the Canon at same price range is a better camera

I got a Canon about 5-6yrs ago specifically for the first IRG. I went with a Canon for a few reasons, I have a Canon point-n-shoot so I was already familiar, it used the same battery and memory foramt as the p-n-s, and I had a couple 35mm Canon lenses that would work with the new camera.

There was a Rebel on Woot a while back for $399 or something like that. As mentioned, you can't go wrong with a Canon, Nikon. They both have lots of support.

I have a canon T1i - they are up to a T3i now. I love the thing. I can use my old canon lenses from my old elanIIe and I have just gotten one of the new zooms with image stabilizer.

Can't go wrong with either canon or nikon. I stuck with canon because it's what I know in 35mm.

I wish that I could find the digital equivalent of the trusty ol' Pentax K1000. Robust metal case, all manual (with light meter), and inexpensive high quality lenses. Set shutter speed, twist aperture to center light meter, focus & shoot. Everything solid and tactile. Point and shoot and preset computerized exposure settings have never been my cup-o-tea.

I currently have a Nikon D50 (the price was better than right ... sister-in-law hand-me-down [Thanks Roberta]) I really do like the camera, it takes beautiful images and has excellent color reproduction, but the lenses are computerized and expensive and exposure adjustments have to be done with "fiddly" buttons and dials on the camera body instead of out on the lens where "working man" hands can adjust without looking. The focus ring (when the AF is turned off) is only 1/2 a finger wide (a new lens might be able to fix this issue.) I seem to find myself asking "why is it focusing there??!?!" more often than I should.

In all reality it's like the Ford-Chevy-Dodge issue ... your own unique preferences, likes, and dislikes will determine what's best for you. My recommendation is the same as what has already been stated ... Cannon, Nikon, Sony, etc.

What kind of pictures do you like to take and what is your budget? You can spend big bucks or buy a more modest outfit. You'll be able to get great photographs either way you go, but, depending on your dedication level, the environment in which you will be shooting, the intended final use of your photos, your subject matter, and a host of other factors could influence your decision. I use Nikons, but, Canon, Olympus, Pentax & Sony make good equipment also.
