Let me splain I had a Kodak point and shoot that I really liked I took it on a two month road trip and got some great shots. They quit making the rechargeable battery for it I could have gotten around that but decided I wanted a new camera.. So I gave it to my Grandson and bought one of those little put in your pocket camera from Sony. I have never liked it its to small and It is to small to hold on to.It takes good pictures but I tend to get them blurred sometimes..
I think I do have an eye for pictures and would like to explore it more. Then I can really bug you all with pictures of La Tortuga. Then again do I need a good camera to take pictures of a trailer..Sometimes it takes me days to talk myself into spending money. I am thinking about that Cannon Rebel ok keep talking I am almost there.

Back in 1987, I bought my K1000 used for $120 with case, 10 piece filter set, 2 high quality lenses, and a flash kit. Even with inflation, $6949.95 for body only and $1395.00 for a 50mm f2.5 lens is a little on the pricey side ... but a guy can dream though.

Who knew? that Canon Rebel XS is back on Woot today. www.woot.com

If you're unfamiliar with Woot they offer one item each day, when it is sold out that is it. I've purchased several things from them over the years without a problem, so they are pretty reputable.

Olympus SLR digital. Buy the best you can afford. Seems to me that everyone else copies them.

I have been a pro shooter for a hell of a long time. I started with Nikon then Canon, and now I am going to dump the canon and equipment and purchase the new Sony NEX 7. Wow is all I can say. It is quiet not like the SLR you seem to always here slapping away when the mirror goes up and down. Check it out. As good as a pro model. But smaller and hardly noticeable when you are shooting. Some people go for the big because it makes them feel big. It is not about that but what are you able to get as a image maker that is important.

I have always been partial to smallish camera. Carried an Oly OM1 film camera for many years. Currently just using a Canon P&S, but am wanting to get back into more serious photography.

My problem with full on SLR's is the size/weight. I just won't have it with me when I need it, because it's in a bag at home. I have been looking at high end P&S's like the Canon G12, S95, etc. But the best image quality comes from the sensor size not the Megapixel count. SLR's have the largest sensors, thus the best images. However the size/weight thing is a deal breaker for.

I am seriously looking at Micro 4/3rds size cameras. Both Olympus and Panasonic have been offering them for awhile now. They are much smaller than full SLR's but have much larger sensors than the best P&S's. They are not quite a jeans pocket cameras, but fit a coat pocket, especially with a pancake lens.
Other manufactures, Sony, Fuji, Nikon, etc. have jumped into this size camera with it's interchangeable lens and large sensors. However, In my case, Olympus and Panasonic are a little ahead right now because they interchange with each others lenses, plus I can use my old lenses from my 30 year old OM1 on either brand. (legacy glass).

IMO/ the best camera is one you have with you, and only a P&S can truly fit a shirt pocket, and more likely to be with you. A DSLR takes the best pictures, no argument there, but it's size limits it's use for me anyway. The sweet spot is the new crop of interchangeable lens cameras that are much smaller.

I hate you!!!! I dream of that camera all the time. Pop Photo's camera of the year. It is by far the sexiest camera ever!!! However, It's a little out of my reach. I'm in the $500 range, but if I wanted to spend that much, it would be in my radar.

Enjoy, and please send us some images....

Yes it is a bit on the expensive side. It will take a while to save up the bucks. But what a nice unit. That is the only one out there outside of the Lecia digital that is in my sights for a good shooting camera.

I've been a photographer for 45+ years and have had a number of cameras and SLRs over the years. With digital photography I've come to question the need to carry around a bulky and heavy SLR given that most digital camera show you their thru-the-lens image in an electronic viewfinder or on the rear led screen.

My main camera these days is a Canon digital elph that takes great pictures and is small enough to always have with me.

For me the paramount factor is the lens, not megapixels. If you don't have a good lens you wont get good pictures. Next would be usability and then image processing.

As mentioned by others, these days I'd take a look at the non-SLR 4:3 cameras that have interchangeable lenses and are fairly compact.

A few years ago I decided I wanted a digital SLR. So I started reading and reading and READING all the info I could find online.

What it boiled down to (for me) is that it truly is as was mentioned above: It's a Ford / Chevy / Dodge thing. When I was racing I used to say "It's not the factory that builds the car, it's the garage." Meaning: I don't care if you are racing a Ford / Chevy / Dodge, or whatever. The real performance comes from the guy who puts the vehicle together and operates it.

I'll admit that there's a lot less customization you can do with DSLR's, but I think the principal still lives. Whether you end up buying a Canon, a Nikon, or some other big name, the end results (the photos) are going to be more a function of your photographic eye.

I ended up choosing a Canon EOS. It was a used 6.2 megapixel model that claimed to be in like-new condition. It was. I have been extraordinarily happy with it. At 6.2 megapixels the prints are great up to about 8"x10" or so. Higher megapixels mean the ability to go to larger prints, but how often is that really needed.

There are lots of lens choices available for the Canon (as I'm sure there are for the Nikons and others). Also, the lenses are threaded for the use of filters. Although, with the power of Photoshop, you really can do most things on the computer that you used to need a filter for. So don't let that be a guiding decision-maker.

In short, most of the DSLR's that are currently out there are going to allow you to do the things you want to do.

One note: It was mentioned that many point-and-shoot cameras can take pictures that are just as good as a DSLR. For many things, that is true. But keep in mind that manual control over your photo is nice. Being able to adjust the aperture and focus manually can get you a lot of options with depth-of-field, etc.

I love my DSLR but I don't use it a whole lot. I have an iPhone that I use for 99% of my picture taking. That's good enough for me. But I do grab the EOS for special events, or for when my wife and I go out hiking with the express purpose of looking for photo ops.

Have fun with your quest for the perfect DSLR! Remember that pretty much any DSLR you choose is going to take fantastic pics. Perhaps the biggest thing is to price out and look at the accessories that will work with the body you choose. You are going to want to get extra lenses, filters, etc. to go with your neew toy!

Here is an idea

Postby ssrjim » Sun Jan 01, 2012 1:34 pm

Post a couple samples of pictures from your camera. List the Camera name and if you like a link to your photo album to look at more.
