Getting Bigger?

Postby stumphugger » Fri Dec 30, 2011 10:27 am

I find myself seriously considering upgrading to a 13' Casita with bathroom. I can't do Casino parking lot camping unless I do. The Little Guy is comfy, but I feel limited as to where I can camp in civilization. Out in the sticks is not a problem.

Have you looked at the T@B trailers, they are still tear drop shaped. IIRC Little Guy sells them.

EDIT; here's the flyer, little guys does sell them.

You could do a standie! I'm building one out of foam, but you could build out of wood.

If you need to purchase, I would suggest a T@B or anything similar.

If it's a full bathroom that you are eluding to, check out the fun finder.

Oops, I should add that I got a red Ford Ranger to tow with. I haven't figured out the tow rate yet, but the smaller the better for me.

Rangers get terrible gas mileage, but the price was right for a much needed 4x4.

I phoned about a used Casita, but it had sold.

I don't know if I could make a whole trailer. Let me see how making a box for the pickup bed goes.

I'm also pondering getting a 6 X12 Cargo trailer, but would prefer a rounded or V shaped front on one. I need to study that forum more. I'd want windows and a bathroom in it.

Casita Scamp trailers

Postby Wild Bill » Sat Dec 31, 2011 8:58 pm

They are nice trailers, I was watching them for a year or so. The resale value "appears" to be great with 11 orf 12 year old trailers still bringing 6 - 8 thousand bucks! Scamp makes a 5th wheel but you lose all the space in your truck, Watch for scammers they are everywhere! Camp lite or aluma lite trailers are real nice too. Good luck If I had an extra 15k I would be towing one. A lot of cash to lay out and still have to pay 30 bucks per night to park it. Bill

Did I mention that I'm cheap? :)

I'll start the saving money and thinking process. I am interested in the 13 or was it 14 foot Scamp also.

Mike, I read quite a bit of your foamie thread yesterday. I'm curious as to how strong it will be. I'd like to go longer on a trailer, but not fifth wheel long.
I'd also like to keep it as lightweight as I can.

I have a shop building to work in, with a kitty that keeps it mouse free, but the kitty also walks on things and makes me sneeze. The shop is uninsulated and quite damp in the winter. Winter is about 9 months of rain or drizzle.

I made a foamie hot tub cover, which I may try to modify by using some techniques from your thread.

My neighbor has a 13' Scamp and loves it. I think he paid about $3500 for it. It's a 76.

I didn't look at where you are...I know a guy who has one in NC who wants to sell but hasn't gotten around to it. Family outgrew it. If you are interested, I'll put you in touch with him.

I'll find out how much he wants for it..I think he just wants to sell it, not cash in on it, so if you have an idea of what you want to pay, lemme know.

T@bs are cool...but they are big. Darren pulls his Scamp with his Camry. No problems. It's heavier than my Grasshopper, which he brought from the next state for me, and that was like towing air!

The foamie method is surprisingly strong. Of course, the smaller it is, the stronger it is.

My foamie is 5 1/2' by 10', and the question I have for myself is: am I pushing the envelope?. So far, I think it's going to be plenty strong. But keep watching the build, we'll keep you informed!

I'm about 100 miles from the Pacific Ocean, which would be too far. :( But thankyou anyway.

I'll ponder for a while...a new one may be in order and I have done the roadtrip to Wisconsin. Montana is a long state! I think Minnesota can be gotten to in 3 long days.

I shall watch the foamie project. If nothing else, it has given me ideas on how to improve my home made foamie hot tub cover.

I like the 13 Scamp with bathroom. But my little VW probably isn't up to the job.

We have a vintage teardrop, but 6 months ago bought a 1984 13 foot Uhaul fiberglass camper to use for longer term camping. We just did a 2500 mile, month long trip, 3 weeks in one location. It weighs 1300 lb. and we towed it with a 2003 Honda CRV. It cost $2000 but needed a little work. It worked great for us. We've looked at a couple Casitas and they are a nice trailer. Look at the FiberglassRV website for info and trailers for sale. There has been an ongoing scam for a Scamp on Craigslist, too good to be true description and price, after contacting the seller, you're told the trailer is at a shipping company and can be shipped anywhere for free.
