Frankenstein propane lantern?

Postby Aaron Coffee » Sun Jan 01, 2012 7:47 pm

Kind of toying with a frankenstien propane lantern using parts from a cheap walmart lantern, the question I have is the threads on these something that fittings would be available at hardware/big box stores or are they something exclusive to propane lanterns, also would copper line be sufficient to carry gas from the valve to the lantern?
Thanks

There are fittings that are propane specific i.e. valves and quick disconnects. Yes copper will work and most fittings. What are you going from, a 20# tank or 1# bottle. Having just gone through the exercise of setting up a small grill so that it will work with CR you may be money ahead buying what you need premade.

The wild farmer boy in me says to go for it. But the nagging in the back of the mind says before you put a match to it to check any joints, fittings with soapy water.

THEN FIRE THAT SUCKA UP.

If you are using a regulator on a propane tank the out pressure is very low. Like about 5 lbs. Or if you are using the 1 lb bottles and a valve made for them the opening is very small. Really, if you just be careful is pretty hard to really hurt something. Remember profane is heavier than air but again you would need a lot to even get your attention. Many of the fittings are standard pipe threads. there are some left hand threads and who knows what all. That is why there are welding outfits, to make your own adapters. Or can use other tools to do all kinds of tom foolery.

What I am thinking is making a copy of the bernz-o-matics except for the short fat 1 lb cylinders, I have a cheap wlamart propane lantern that has a cracked globe, and has been hanging in the garage for a couple years.

Sounds good I thought about the same thing if the new bottles did not fit,Now I am thinking about a white gas version using a old coleman burner.

That sounds cool. Just be sure to tilt the bottle enough so you don't suck liquid. Angle might be different
