As one of the commenters pointed out the flat back is a drag in an otherwise very sleek design.

Not particularly - most teardrops behave as if they had a flat back, because the slope over the hatch is way too steep for the airflow to stick to.

'Streamlining' as used in teardrops is styling, not aerodynamics.

Ours is for all intents flat and I have been thinking of using air tabs http://www.airtab.com/main.html
It would be interesting to go with a Buckminister Fuller Dimaxion design http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlLZE23EJKs in a trailer design. One of the advantages of a foamy would be the ability to sculpt a very slippery teardrop.

I read car designers discovered that a higher trunk lip is more efficient, look at the super slippery Prius, the back end is very Aztek like, the roof is also higher on the outer edges than the middle to induce turbulence to wash down the trunk
