Wise man you are Kirk...I was going to trounce you with a wooden bridge over a stream picture next go-around. Have a great day, Jim :snappy:

Reddiver: Did you get enough information that you were looking for before this thread digressed all the way to "my flower is better than your flower"? It appeared as though you were leaning towards a Canon Rebel...did you ever decide, or at least solidly on your way to making a decision? In my opinion you really can't go wrong with a Canon or Nikon, and either one of these would probably make you a very happy camper. I bought the Canon...but that does not mean the Nikon was not a very strong contender!

Yeah Jim I am really lean toward the Cannon Rebel T3 Now the hard part getting my cheap old ass to part with the money.. I dont use my little camera much but I think the Rebel would increase my interest and possibly take a Photo Shop class in the Local adult school .. I hate when I do this to myself its not that I dont have the dough

Judging from your picture we're close in age, and I know what you mean. When I bought mine it was after my wife nagging me "what are you saving all your money for? Enjoy some of it while you're still here...live a little." So I compromised...I bought my Canon Rebel, but bought everything through the internet at as low a price as I could find. I even found 4 Gig Sandisk Extreme 3 memory cards for $29 each (which was a fantastic find 3 years ago before memory got so cheap) that if you bought 3 you got a $40 each rebate. So I bought 3 for $90 and Sandisk mailed me a check for $120...how could I say no? Fantastic deals out there, just make sure to buy the English version. Good luck and have fun with your new camera.

Invest in glass. A $500 rebel with a $1200 L-series lens will out perform a $3k camera with a $100 lens :)

I agree with that but the eye is more important than the equipment.. a $300 dovetail saw and a $100 chisel will not give you a tight fitting joint or one with an aesthetically pleasing layout.. only developed skills and an educated eye will get you that..

I wouldn't worry about making a huge investment right now. Get something affordable and see how you like it, see how much you use it. If you do find that it is something you could get into, then by all means save up for a better rig. Sometimes, I'd love to get a faster lens, but I just can't justify the expense since I'm only a casual user.

I've bought and sold lenses on eBay and Craig's List. Many old lenses are excellent, especially the fixed-focal length lenses in the 35 mm to 135 mm range.

Relax guys. Steve doesn't know a zoom from a prime, and doesn't have a clue about the difference between an Canon FD lens and a Canon EOS lens.

He just wants to take better photos than his P&S allows. He doesn't need L glass or manual focus prime lenses. He wants simple picture taking, not a complex obsession (hobby).

He's looking to take pictures, not invest in equipment, nor does he expect to become the world's greatest photographer. Let's not complicate matters, and confuse poor Steve further by suggesting things like L glass and used manual focus prime lenses. Yes those things can be important, especially to those of us who have been photographers for 50 years or more, but they aren't important to Steve.

Just as when taking a photo, don't lose sight of the subject.

I know what a zoom is but your right I dont know all that stuff. I just want to take better pictures and play around and try to be creative.. I am a better wood worker than photographer . As far as taking pics for fifty years cant happen dont have that many left.

I'm just saying don't go buy a $6k body like the 1dx :) The kit lens (the one that comes with the camera) is a great one to start with.

Of course then you need to get your aspherical glass, 23 element prime focal, non-glare, magnesium hybrid, doohickey majig lens. It's just natural progression :)
