Galley Surface Finish Over Epoxy?

Greetings,

I have 3 coats of Raka Epoxy over oak ply for my galley counter top. I'm looking for a durable coating that will retain the clear look but be resistant to scratches. What have other used?

Not sure if it applies...but about 15 years ago I built a kitchen table for our home and finished it with 3 coats of an oil based Urethane varnish.

The stuff smelled awful (as opposed to run of the mill polyurethane varnish) but 15 years later, after 4 children and hard use, there still isn't a scratch through the surface down to the wood.

Urethanes are very hard and durable.
Wish I could remember the brand name...

How about an oil based urethane floor finish. If it can stand up to floor traffic? We used oil based Minwax floor finish on our old wood floors 6 years ago and have only had to refinish in the areas with the most heavy traffic in all that time (once). If it can stand up to that, it should be able to stand up on a trailer that only sees occassional use.

I've got Helmsman Spar Urethane in my galley. It has worked very well for me....

I use the Helmsman Urethane spar for the galley lid.
I use plam (plastic Laminate) for the counter and walls.
It's almost bulletproof, impervious to water and never needs re coating. Danny

I've got Helmsman Spar Urethane in my galley. It has worked very well for me....

On our first tear we did the same, held up great. We have tile in the second tear.

If you are unaware, I believe epoxy needs to be scuffed to help any varnish-type finish adhere.

Yes,

I have found wet sanding to be better for me than dry sanding epoxy. I wet sanded with 220 and applied 3 coats of Helmsman urethane. We will sew how it lasts. Sure looks good!

There is a clear epoxy that is poured onto commercial bars and tables. It is hard, transparent and very durable. I seem to remember that the owner of one establishment had embedded a $100 bill where the bartender put your change- made for interesting watching the slightly tipsy patrons keep trying to pick up their change. It should be commercially available from restaurant supply houses.
