Roof Rack Built

Postby sunny16 » Tue Mar 07, 2006 3:55 pm

I just built a roof rack for my tear over the weekend. I had to build it twice cuase I wasn't happy with the welds the first go around. But it should fit perfect on to of the roof towards the back of the tear. Now I just need to wait for better weather so I can actually work on the sides and body! Can't wait.

Just 1/2" tube for the rails and 3/4" tube for the corners. I have caps for the tops. And I have a canvas luggage bag that will fit just perfectly for any extra camping "stuff" if I need any more room.

I cut it three times and it's still too short!!
Perfection is all I ask.......

Nice

I never really mastered welding, something I wish I had picked up, sure can see many uses for it during the build.

I didn't know how to weld until I bought a welder last summer and built my trailer frame. I couldn't find anyone to build it for me so I did the next best thing. It sure has come in handy. I have worked around welders, (people) in my line of work so I understood the idea. Just never tried it to get good but it's not so hard once you get the hang of it. MIG welding is pretty easy if you take your time and have the right setup on the machine. And I got to buy something I always wanted in the shop! I think that's one of the added benefits to building a tear! New tools!!

Waiting for "someday" will leave you on your deathbed wondering why you didn't just rearrange your priorities and enjoy the time you had, instead of waiting for a "better" time to come along...

A small Mig machine is on my "gotta have" list. Right behind the 12" sliding miter saw.

original idea ?

Postby waywardson » Tue Mar 07, 2006 8:05 pm

Thats a great lookin' rack,
Since I cant weld I had to come up with an alternate,
Im not sure if its an original idea or not,
If it is or isnt, we will soon know,
I did the one for the Fish out of 3/4" copper water pipe,
The entire project took less than an hour,
Since I like the patina copper gets I wont even seal it,
Its a really easy project that anyone could do,
Lowes even stocks pre soldered fittings,
Using these you wouldnt even see the solder,
I intentionally let some of my solder show,
I wanted that look,

see ya'
