Battery location

Postby Woodbutcher » Tue Jan 10, 2012 10:22 pm

I am working on a new build. The battery takes up a lot of room in the galley area. To me it is easier to hook up all the electric in the rear. So I thought about dropping the battery through the floor in a box. Has anyone tried that. If so did you make a wood box or is there a metal box that would work.

Check your ground clearance - the battery box is nearly as deep as the axle on my harbor freight. I was unable to find commercial boxes that would work, so my solution was to make one from fiberglass. Ran the wires thru a conduit embedded in the floor to the fuse box in the galley sidewall. Definately a time consuming project, but frees up galley space, and moves 60lbs of battery next to the axle.

Thanks for the info. My thought was to drop it near the axle also. I was hoping someone had a nice metal box with a flange on it to hang through the floor. A heavy battery bouncing down the road in a wood box could be a problem.

I've been hit with the same problem on my new build. Not really a problem I guess. But I was originally going to put the battery in the tongue box, but now I've decided that I'm going to hang it underneath.

I have all this empty space available since I raised the sleeping deck using 2x4's. Now I plan on cutting a hole on the floor, and making a battery rack using angle stock and all-thread from Lowes. Nothing fancy.

That sound good but how will Bobs brackets work to keep the battery out of the weather. Being under the trailer it need to be sealed against dust and water at road speed. I may use an ammo box and cut it shorter and bend over the top edges to make a flange. This would stand up to the elements.

Batteries by design are very resilient. Many antique cars have hanging battery trays that are open on the sides.

Zach is right.

The battery in my 28 ford is exposed under the floor.
No problems after all these years.

Many Modern rv's place the batteries in a position where they are hit with road spray...
Keeping the cables strapped and unable to be snagged is of greater concern.

I know they are in Sams Club, Autozone, and Pep Boys. I'm sure they are plenty of other places. Sams was cheapest when I bought one as a aux battery for my 4Runner.

I was hoping to be able to keep all the battery connections inside the galley. Plus I need to be able to get the battery out easily. So I will continue hunting for a box like 101camper has. I just don't want to start a fiberglass project.

Here's how the floor looks with the battery access holes. I make matching hatches trimmed with "T" molding and seals. :D Danny

Steve,

I placed my batteries under the galley, on the floor inside and have an exterior access door.
The batteries are sealed off from the rest of the galley.

Rob, I was trying to keep this build as simple as possible. I tend to get to fancy and the build gets out of control. I need to have this ready for the Wyoming outing in August. If I can find something to just drop 6 or so inches down through the floor I can mount my WFCO right above it so a quick and easy install with minimum loss of space. Thanks to all for your input!
