Boat trailer???

Postby Treeview » Fri Jan 13, 2012 3:16 pm

Before I changed my mind about having a trailer unit I looked at a couple of boat salvage yards for trailers. There were MANY trailers that were sturdy and CHEAP! Most needed new tires and would get bearing repacking.

I wonder why so many people are infatuated with the Harbor Freight/Northern bolt together trailers. Those are pretty low capacity, small tired and, to me, a pretty inadequate platform to start from.

Boat trailers are usually galvanized too.

Why don't people use old boat trailers as a build base?

Been wondering that myself. I inquired after one from C'list today but I was too late. I'm still in the looking for a platform stage and may go with Tractor Supply's 5x8...

A few people have used boat trailers. Sonetpro and I think CaseyDog did.

If you have access to a decent boat trailer at a good price - go for it!

On my boat trailer I cut out about 3' and moved the rest back and welded it back together using the original tounge. A couple of angle cross members to flaten it out and had a nice 5 X 8 that I used for a couple years as a utility trailer for my jeep. It was pretty light to. Then the camper bug bit and I stripped all the wood of and moved the axel back another foot and built the camper on top. I like to recyle and this is my way of doing it. Larry
