General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

This is what I'm planning on doing.

All bolt-together, from 14 gauge 1-1/2" steel angle The orange in the screenshot is 1x2 boards used to reinforce the 1/2" plywood trailer deck around the opening.

All the steel angle will be bolted together with 3/8" bolts, and the assembly will be attached using carriage bolts through the trailer deck and 1x2 boards.

Might not be pretty, but should be plenty sturdy, even for my driving.

And I can always come back and box it in with some thin plywood.

Zach,
I'd definitely box it in to keep the battery free of road grime and cut down on rodent/insect infiltration.

Yea that's what I was thinking to. This looks like a perfect solution for me. Thanks Zack for the idea!

I can tell you that at Winnebago the coach battery compartments are closed to the sides but open to the bottom just a couple straps running underneath. Then some threaded rod and a strap bolting them in. They are sealed only from the interior of the rv but open on the bottom for venting.

Its going to have a cover on top, and I think I'll put a piece of plywood on the front face of the box to protect from flying road debris, but I probably won't box the whole thing in.
