Malware or adware or what?

Postby Lesbest » Mon Jan 16, 2012 6:56 pm

I know this has been discused here before, but I'm frustrated and angry at my computer in general.

I have highlighted words in the text of messages in this and other forums that I browse.

If I move the cursor over one of these highlighted words a popup opens and it is called Rival games, and they have a game of the day to play if you want. I don't!

To delete, it says to go to my computer, add/delete etc., etc.. Found it in my list deleted, rebooted, gone from list--still on computer.??!!##

Googled rival games -- and you can imagine what comes up, football, basketball, NFL. Nothing I could use.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Les

You should use malwarebyes. http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

But it might be easier to fix. If you are using IE for a browser. Go to tools and then Manage Add-ons. See if anything there looks like the culprit and disable it. If nothing looks like the one you need to stop, then disable anything that you are not sure what it does or where it is from.

Let us know if the above doesn't fix it. There's another tol I use that takes care of a few things Malwarebytes tends to skip over.

Use MB to remove the junk. Then I use NoScript add on with Firefox and I don't get any of those underlined crapware links.

Les,

Go to www.bleepingcomputer.com. Download their ComboFix tool.

Go into the control panel and programs and make sure that Rival doesn't show in the list of programs. Uninstall it if it does.

Run ComboFix. The first time it will likely take half an hour. After your computer reboots and the log file displays, close the log file and run Malwarebytes again.

Let us know if hat still doesn't take care of the problem.

You might try AVG anti-virus. Its free and it works well for me.

Which Browser are you using - If It IE then the infection extents to your browsing objects and needs to be manually deleted - this can be done by opening tools > internet options>Progams, click the "manage add ons" and look for a browser helper object that has been recently installed and disable it.

Spyware Search & Destroy

I have been using this for years, and it has worked when nothing else seemed to work. If you are using IE, someone did a driveby addin, others slide in under the radar when you update a program.

Fixed!!!!! Ran scans as previously stated--it didn't work. Looked at all the suggestions, didn't make any diff.

Noticed tonight that it was gone---asked the wife what happened? She said went to add/delete found program deleted-rebooted--GONE.

Same thing I did, except mine didn't go, but the heading did.

Go figure......glad it's gone.

Thank you all for your help.
