Well I called Geico today and was told something different. Because my "camper" was not maufactured by one of the "RV Manufacturers" they cant insure it because it is a one of a kind.

What companies are you folks useing for homebuilts? I told her the frame is from harbour freight but the rest I built and she said no they cant insure it. I should have called a few days ago cause today its bein brought home from my friends house where I built it.

thanks

I am just starting and will definitely try to insure it when finished. I live in NH and auto insurance is not required!! Therefore if someone hits me they may not be insured.

We're using Allstate. $10,000 replacement value is about $85/year.

Really? That would save a bunch of money every month if we didn't have to insure the cars!

Yea really, it is a real pain because they don't have insurance so the rates are a little higher for those of us that do. But wouldn't think of driving without it.

MightyDog, is it assumed value, or did you have to get it appraised?

thanks

State Farm Insurance

Postby GeoDrop » Thu Jan 19, 2012 12:33 pm

We just insured our trailer for $5000. Rate is $162/yr with $250 ded. through State Farm. I'm not sure this is terribly competitive with what I've seen others post.. but provided as a point of reference.

I did have to create a VIN and they came out to take pictures.

It's an assumed value from our insurance agent.

This is NOT good news, as we also insure with Geico and will definitely want to insure the teardrop when it is finished. Well, Lance and I have been wondering for the past 2 years if we were getting the best insurance possible. Maybe now is the time to pursue a change.

Wow, I agree. We insure EVERYTHING through Geico (homeowners, auto, umbrella, etc), and have been very happy with their rates and their service. I will be taking delivery of my new TD in a couple of months, and will certainly want to insure it. A few years back I had a classic Mercedes Coupe that I was able to insure cheaply through a company that specialized in classic and collector cars. Does anyone know of an insurance company that specializes in just RV/trailers?

Wired,
I don't think you will have a problem with Geico if you are buying a commercially manufactured trailer. It's only us "homebuilts" they don't want to deal with.

Im sure if you call it a home built "enclosed trailer" there not going to care. They were mostly concerned about haveing homebuilt rv's so many things could go wrong.

OK, here is the best advice that I can offer by being an insurance agent. (I am licensed in Washington State). Go see your agent, in your state. Laws are different in each state.

For example, on mine, I used an endorsement on my tow vehicle. It was the most inexpensive route for me to go. I have some basic coverage with my home owners and auto policies however that would not have been enough to replace the loss.

If you can not talk with your agent then get a new one. If your agent tries to sell you something that you don't need then get a new one. An agent is just an adviser and sometimes they will tell you things that you do not want to hear. If you walk away from an agent's office wondering what you just bought then get a new one.

PS, As an agent, I don't sell 'full coverage'. Asking an agent for full coverage is like going to McDonalds, ordering a hamburger and then wondering why you got charged for a quarter pounder and served a McRib.
The quickest way to find me is on my business site. Yes, I do answer questions and provide quotes for free. Find me at: http://www.wenatcheefarmers.com

I was wondering if you could explain what that means in actual insurance terms, maybe I am confused about what full coverage is.
