New couple from Colorado...

Postby Martinjmpr » Fri Jan 20, 2012 1:31 pm

Hmmm...tried to post this yesterday but my post disappeared, I think?

(EDIT: Looks like maybe I clicked on the "preview" button rather than the "submit" button which would explain why I was able to view my post but then it never showed up! DOH! )

Anyway, my name is Martin, wife and I just picked up a homemade teardrop (converted cargo trailer) and we hope to use it a lot for camping this Summer.

Here's a photo as we were bringing it home last Sunday:

Image

She pulled just fine with my '99 4runner, even crossing two 10,000'+ passes (Vail and the Eisenhower Tunnel.)

As you can see from this picture, she's not big, but she should work just fine for the three of us (me & wife, + dog.)

Image

It's a pretty simple design but it does include an air conditioner! No on-board power, though, we have to be connected to a 120vac external power source.

Image

The galley area. Again, nothing fancy. I'll have to see how we want to set this up for camping...

Image

Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading through these forums and getting some ideas about how to modify and use our trailer. We've never owned a camping trailer before so this is a new experience for us.

Yeah you're right mike. My old eyes ain't what they use to be. Old VW's had a wide 5 bolt pattern very much like that. Larry

Yup, they're mobile home wheels. No center hub (the lug bolts go into wedges that hold the wheel in place.) Makes it hard to find a way to mount the spare!

How difficult is it to change to a different kind of wheel?

It may mean replacing the axle. If it is a mobile home axle many of which were made for one time use you may have a problem. An interesting discussion on another site.

I would use a drop axle, it would give you more options on the height of the trailer. for a trailer to tow right it should be level behind the tow rig
