I've been reading here about converting cargo trailers to campers and decided to put a little twist in my project. I found this box at a surplus center and built the trailer to suit the project.

The trailer is 3" square tubing with 3500 lbs. axles, since the picture was taken, I returned the straight axles and went to the drop axles to get a lower stance. I know that will push the tires a little more into the box but I am trying to get a little less wind drag and the over all height down.

I did a 7x11 box conversion on a military communication shelter and carried it around in the back of a 2 1/2 ton military truck. Had a friend that was scrapping a camper so was able to scrounge the range and hood, heater, window, propane light, table and some other hardware from that. Welded frames for the full size bunk and cabinetry, outfitted with radios and other gear and used mainly on camping trips with the military vehicle club. I sold this about 5 years ago to a friend but it is still going strong.

Your box should make a very good and stout conversion!!

thanks MikeW, Its what Im shooting for. Most campers that are on the market are weak at best, I know there are a few companies that still make good ones but so far Im a little over 1100 dollars in the project and already have a nice cargo trailer at the very least and when its done I know it will last alot longer then most. I still got to load the pics of my progress but it has been fun.

After I had measured the tandem axles and tires, I had marked the interior floor and unbolted the decking. Once I cut the deck on the future opening the planks came out with little resistance. The cross beams were bolted to the outside of the cargo box also and once I cut the beams and took the exterior bolts out, they just fell out. My safety man was over seeing my progress, If anyone takes on a project like this, make sure you have understanding neighbors, the noise cutting the beams out were a little on the loud side.

Looks like a great safety officer you have there! Mine wasn't much older than that when he helped me build mine. He is all grown up and an emt/firefighter himself

He's been a great help, his little sister is the cheerleader of the group. My fireman buddies are already standing in line to take the camper out, so atleast I got help to work on the inside when it's time. The fire service is a great thing when ya need help on projects. I'm needing to mount the rear jacks and paint the trailer and then set the box. So I'm hoping the weeks to come I'll post the progress.

Well, I have been so busy with life that I haven't been able to work on my trailer till the last few weeks, I got the trailer mounted and the fenders finished.

All you have to do is highlight the link that you pasted for your picture, and then hit the Img button.

You'll end up with something like this...

That will display your photos once the message is posted...

Mike...

Thanks mike,
I have most of my pics on my iPad or iPhone and have been using the touch BB app. I am trying to load them off my pad to a desktop to post them. If there is a way to do this off the iPad or iPhone I'd greatly appreciate any help.
