What is a T or TTT?

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Well said, Becky ... well said ...   ... I couldn't have put it better myself!

Sandy - I certainly didn't mean make anyone who buys a commercially manufactured or someone-else-built trailer feel left out ... I tried to cover that when I said " ... it's a great place to gain & share knowledge of all sorts regarding building & using all manner of small (and not-so-small) trailers!" ... but if I missed the mark a bit, please accept my apologies. While this Forum tends to be more focused on the DIY end of the spectrum, those who purchase are a HUGE part of this hobby/lifestyle, and a segment that is getting bigger every year ... a segment that, while always being more-than-welcomed and included at all of the Gatherings, could probably benefit from a little more attention and discussion here. Hell, without folks to buy trailers, folks who have a build jones would certainly be up the proverbial creek, and this whole thing would stagnate, wither, and go by the wayside!

As always ...

Keep it ALL coming just the way we've been doing!!! (Unless we can add another type of trailer that makes it even more interesting and better, of course!)

When I first joined, I was worried about who and what was accepted. What I was told was that you just had to be interested in teardrops and tiny travel trailers. Heck, we have people who are members and don't yet have a trailer at all. I doubt anyone would want to exclude them. It's the sharing of techniques, information, and camaraderie that counts. Even the camaraderie of being able to argue about something can be interesting! (…As long as it doesn’t get too heated.)

I joined before I had a tiny trailer. I was looking, seriously looking, and sent here by a member who built his own tear.

I like reading about things that do not necessarily apply to me, but I'm interested..(I'm not about to run out for a heater, but I read the thread..just in case..) I am not going to build a trailer, mine is not teardrop shaped, but somehow I fit anyway.

I've learned a lot, 'met' a great many wonderful people, have helped and been helped.

I think it would not be in members' best interest to delete threads about anything that does not fit 'in the box'...it's not like we have people with 32' Airstreams posting here...unless they also have a tear, or a 13' fiberglass trailer, or some other, well, tiny trailer.

And, big or small...don't most of us have issues with hanging curtains, good tires, fake campfires...we all seem to be 'campers'..

I think the group is somewhat self-limiting in who it attracts..I'm not sure that is the correct way to phrase it. There is a certain group that is here. Big fulltime RVs just won't find our stuff interesting. Tent campers probably would, but would be brainwashed...I mean convinced...no, exposed to the idea that teardrops or tiny standies (ok, 'stoopies'..as in, if you are tall, you have to stoop!) are just a more comfortable, secure tent.

Mike can limit how he chooses, but if we started cutting members out, it wouldn't be good for the group as a whole. And the group functions well as it is.

If you aren't interested in a topic, don't read it. If you are concerned the big trailers are taking over the treads, think again. If you just don't like that there is no line drawn as to what a tiny trailer is, heck, do some research and toss it out there.

I think the folks in charge around here have done a good job with dividing up topics and threads so the trailer types are divided by interest. Then there are the things like CI, Vintage Camping equipment...that stuff works for everyone, and just brings us all more together as campers.

I for one would not like to be allowed to only be able to post in the Grasshopper, Sunspot and Sunhopper section. We'd get pretty bored talking amongst ourselves really quick! Not saying anyone is boring..it's just that there aren't many of us (but at least we could share the same fake fire!!!)

Just my 2+ cents.

I am fairly new. And joined to get ideas for my build (which is a loose interpretation of a "Teardrop") I am gaining lots of useful info here.
The next step will be traveling info and events schedules, so I can meet some new people outside of my old hobby. Cars, Cars, Cars.
Thanks for allowing me to participate so far.

Re: What is a T or TTT?

Postby mezmo » Tue Jan 24, 2012 3:39 am

I hesitated at first to post on this as the topic has been discussed
before - in a TD you can't stand up and the 'kitchen' area is accessed
from the outside, and a TTT is a small Travel Trailer, generally single
axled and usually able to be towed by smaller vehicles [the American
idea of smaller anyway]. I like to think of a TTT as having a body not
longer that the tow vehicle's length. But these are general descriptions,
there are plenty of permutations/variations/ideas on that.

What irked me, though, was the following:

"I think the moderators should come to some agreement about what is
the maximum size for a trailer to be included in the forum and to delete
those threads which do not conform to the philosophy of T & TTT."

Especially the deleting of posts/threads that do not "conform to the
philosophy of T&TTT".

The trouble with religion is dogma. The trouble with politics is ideology.
Why does anything resembling either need to be introduced here? This is
the friendliest forum I've run across. Why advocate for making it less?

The core emphasis here is TDs and TTTs. If that is your only interest,
then confine your reading to those specific areas. All the other areas -
cargo conversions, vardos, tiny houses, off-road, member's designs
etc. are all out-growths of the core area in my view. Skills developed
for one can be utilized for the others. I find them all interesting, and
get good ideas and inspiration from all the categories.

This forum also has a heavy emphasis on DIY/Self Building - that can
cover anything from a total new build to remodeling/modifying/restoring
existing/purchased units. Information from this area is also beneficial
for any builder/modifier/user - no matter what the type, or size, of the
unit being worked on.

The creativity and great ideas generated here are the real attraction here,
buoyed up by the cooperative and friendly demeanor of forum members.
Don't try to impose personal views upon others. Arbitrary restrictions will
only poison this great well of information and comradery.

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

+1 for Norm, +1 for Becky, +1 for Grant.

I have no intention of building from the frame up. I have and will continue to "remodel" my TTT and possibly a TD (should I decide to get one). But, you all accept me here, even though I'm not going through a full build. And, I thank you for that.

I love all of the ideas. If I don't like a topic, I just skip over it. There's a lot of other stuff to read. (Has anyone ever really read every single entry???)

I truly want to thank this T&TTT for the open sharing of ideas, and open giving of advice. This is a good place to be for anyone who wants to be here.

+1 for everybody.

I will build a second something and plan on seeking advice once again from all that offer it up.

Most likely the "something" will fall toward being larger rather than smaller. Don't know yet. I have not seen a build - big or small; new from the ground up, conversion or renovation; exotic or simple - that I haven't learned from.

Please keep posting trailers of all sizes!

I'm also some what of a black sheep on this forum.. Both my trailers are tandem axle cargo trailers.. I started with a 6x14 toyHauler . Then once we needed a second machine to take camping with us I sold the smaller trailer and converted a 7x24+V Both my trailers aren't really small. And my 7x24 is considered big even by the converted cargo trailer forum. But if you look at my trailers everything is packed in there pretty tight because of the garage space needed to haul our two UTVs. My current trailer has almost a 20 foot garage. That means everything else is packed into about a 5x7 area. For us to buy a commercial toy hauler with the size garage we needed we would have had atleast a 8x30 trailer that was 22 thousand plus dollars and would have a dry weight of almost what ours is loaded. Most of them are also built like junk. Building mine like I did I ended up with a better built brand new trailer. That weighs less, has a smaller foot print and cost half as much.

To me thats what these DIY forums are about. People trying to use less to fit their needs/wants. Less might mean smaller, Might mean lighter, Might mean cheaper, or a combination. If someone posts on here how they installed a window or a porch light on their 25 foot tandem axle trailer I dont' see how that doesnt' help the guy thats doing the same job on his 16' single axle.. Same goes for guys building cabinets or spice racks..More information shared the more it helps everyone.. JMO...

I vote that we change the name of the forum to Teardrops and Travel Trailers beings how 'Tiny' no longer applies. I also think we should add a section for remodeling/restoring Motorhomes. This would be in the best interest of those who feel left out and be publically correct at the same time. :o

Great discussion, as was stated earlier. Just letting you know that a careful eye ,or two, are keeping tabs on this thread. As some are not averse to casting a line, so to speak, we will take the necessary steps if required.
Thanks to everyone for keeping to the spirit in which this thread was started.
Cheers

This has been a good discussion. I was kind of bummed when I saw it locked up earlier. I mean to say everyone is voicing their opinion and nobody is throwing any mud. :applause:

:applause:  You all have done a great job keeping it clean. No blood drawn.....Since I am still debating my replacement I will only say "way to go Mike" for the freedom of speech he has always promoted and for the out of the box ideas he also promotes...

How about a big fat foamy tiny house...
