What to see? Route 66

Postby Vedette » Wed Jan 25, 2012 10:54 am

We are in the planning stages of our Summer Vacation. A 12,000 mile trip in our newly built teardrop.
Plan to come back west from Chicago on Route 66.
What should we see????
Camping spots that we should hit?
Teardrop gatherings along the way?
August 2012.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Be sure you stay on "Historic" Route 66 as much as possible... The new one bypasses much of what is interesting...

Now you have me searching LP's for Nelson Riddles "Route 66 "
theme...

...that's a GREAT album! Of couse, the song was written by Bobby Troup who can be seen in most episodes of Dragnet or Emergency! I think I saw him in an episode of Adam-12 the other night.

There are small towns that seem little more than a gas station at the end of the off ramp. If you explore, often you will find hidden treasures a mile or so from the gas, Big Gulps and Slim Jims. Little, semi abandoned, towns with 50 or 100 people still living there. Little stores, neat old homes, old fashioned gas stations, etc.

First, Do you own a copy of Michael Wallis' book "Route 66; The Mother Road"? I've read many things about Route 66 and over the course of 45 years have traveled most if it repeatedly. Wallis did a great job.

My favorite camping spot on the entire route has to be Meramec Caverns near Rolla MO. Take the tour of the cave too. It's very well lit and great history.

Other places I would never miss: The arch at St Louis and The National Memorial & Museum at Oklahoma City.

All my travel suggestions come with favorite places to eat and on this route I could go on for hours. But I will narrow it down to two places that I call DO NOT MISS! Dot's Cafe in Claremont, OK an old hometown diner with the very best chicken strips in the whole world and great prices to boot.

The other one is a bit more touristy but you won't be disappointed. It's Lambert's Cafe, Home of the throwed rolls in Ozark, MO. Ozark is a small town about 15 miles south of route 66 at Springfield. This place is amazing fun. The size of the town is 18,000. I think about 20,000 people must eat at Lambert's every day. It's crazy, it's fun and it's worth the wait. If we find the wait is an hour or so there are a group of antique stores around the corner. Once our name is on the waiting list we go shop for 45 minutes. I got the nice cast iron last time.

Hey Brian, I drove the full length of the Mother Road back in 1954 with my new bride. Never had seen endless praries, mountains, deserts and the Pacific Ocean. I'm sure you know that old Route 66 ends here in So Calif. So.......when you get here, be sure to look me up. There is plenty of room for another TD right here in my driveway. I'm about 1/2 way between LA and San Diego, where the I-15 and I-215 come together. Have a great trip, and be sure to stop off at Oatman to check out the burros. There is turn-by-turn available on this website:http://www.historic66.com/illinois/det-il1.htm

Hi Roly
Watched your build link.
Wow! I envy your wood working skills, you are definitely a craftsman!
I hope we do hook up, as my build is the opposite. I am trying to use "No Wood" as my talents lie with steel fabrication.
Check out my Album for build progress.
Hope to be finished by May2012.
Thanks again

See if you can find the movie "Grapes of Wrath" Or the book of course. Some of it was on Route 66.
