Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Hi Scot/Facemeltingly Epic,

"As a kid I used to eat mustard sandwiches a lot."

Aha! I did too. My Mom as mortified that the teachers at school would
think she wasn't feeding me properly! Ha!

Sweet onion and mustard sandwiches were also a favorite. It had/has to
be the French's yellow mustard style mustard though. All the other types
of mustard just aren't the same.

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

Thank you everyone for all the participation of this thread pleas keep all the flavors and ideas coming as I'm sure there are a few more combinations out there that have not been mentioned

Me too! Two slices of white bread, lathered with Frenches, and two layers of saltine crackers and one more layer of Frenches mustard.

We had a name for them but I can't think what it was. Seems like it may have been called a picadilly.

RE: Mustard Sandwiches

Postby mezmo » Fri Jan 27, 2012 11:16 pm

Hi Bill/BillyL,

I grew up in Western New York State and Western Pennsylvania as a little
kid and Western NY in the later years. The school that my Mom was
concerned about the teachers' seeing only mustard on the sandwiches was
Killbuck Public School in the little village of Killbuck, NY, outside of
Salamanca, NY, where I started school halfway into the school-year as we
moved from PA to NY, and PA at the time didn't have kindergarten in their
schools but NY State did.

I never included saltines though. That almost sounds like a Depression era
invention ~ to the mock apple pie made with the crackers. The only unusual thing
I do with saltines is to crumble a sleeve into my tomato
soup and stir until all the crumbs are saturated and then chow down. It's
also good to melt a slice or two of American cheese into the tomato soup
first. Unfortunately Campbells must have changed their tomato soup
recipe as it doesn't taste like it used to taste anymore. We have to squirt
some ketchup into it to help it along now.

Jeez, how did this turn into a food confessional post?

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

I don't let them get saturated, but I like crushed saltines in my tomato soup as well. As for the cheese, I prefer to put that into a grilled cheese sandwich to eat along with the soup.

I honestly don't remember the last time I ate Campbell's tomato soup. These days I usually eat Progresso soups; they make a couple different tomato soups which run rings around Campbell's. My preference is for the tomato basil soup.

It looks like some of our more "unorthodox" tastes in food might not be so strange after all... :)

I lived in LA County for my first 22 years, and lived in an adjacent county for the last 36 years and never knew that a bacon wrapped hot dog was the official hot dog of LA.

I kinda thought the Dodger Dog was the "official" LA dog.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodger_Dog

How in the world would someone in Tulare County know what the official hot dog of Los Angeles is?

Cheers,

Gus
