Alternative Campground Behavior

On a couple of recent threads there was discussion about Trebuchets, spud guns, Jacob's Ladder, WMDs anyway I felt a seperate thread should be started for ACB.

just a repost of a photo so the well behaved campers know what to look out for.

Here's one that my son and his friend (age 15 at the time) made in the driveway last spring. It hurls various things a long distance.

Excellent! what and how far did it throw? ours does tennis balls/water balloons about 75 feet.

Ma3tt: It can throw a coconut about 75 or 80 yards. Sturdy water balloons work sometimes, too.

This is similar to my spud gun I used a ball valve on mine it is fun to fill the barrel with water cool spray.

Yesterday there was a show on one of the Outdoor channels that featured animals doing odd stuff. For some reason there was a segment on people tossing using a Trebuchet. The victims were well wrapped with helmets etc and tossed into a large net. No way you would find me doing that. The site was not identified but the uniforms worn by the ambulance drivers did suggest somewhere in Great Britain.

I'm surprised that was shown - it was indeed in Britain and was closed after someone was killed using it - human catapult.

Trebuchet-building seems to be very popular here as well, particularly on TV. In one programme 'Scrapyard Challenge' (renamed 'Junkyard Wars' when exported to the US), a team managed to throw a Mini (the old little one) about 50 feet. In another programme a proper full-size replica of a Roman siege trebuchet was built, firing decent-sized stones (4 ft diam?) several hundred feet - made big holes in a masonry wall!

There was a PBS show on recently where these guys (scientist?) were trying to replicate a full size trebuchet. It was interesting that they discovered the wheels on the bottom were not only to move it from location to location, they allowed the device to work way more efficiently. Seems that allowing the contraption to roll as it threw kept the projectile perpendicular to the top of the throwing arm and increased the distance by a lot. Thay had slow-mo video and everything showing how this little physics trick made the machine what it was. Them folks were pretty smart back then.
