adapting receiver type multi-axis hitch...

Postby Jeepin'WNC » Thu Feb 02, 2012 3:54 am

I recently purchased an enclosed cargo trailer with hopes of converting it into a dual-purpose motorcycle hauler/off road camper... The tongue is a 2"x4" rectangular tube A-frame type and I would like to convert it to a receiver type with a center "beam" so I can interchange between a standard ball hitch (DOT approved) and a multi-axis hitch for off-road use. This seems to be my biggest hurdle so far in this project...Any ideas????

I think I understand what you are saying  You want to convert from an A frame to a beam, and I have to say yes you can but it will involve cutting and welding and unless you really know what you are doing why bother. The A frame angles are from what I have seen a standard angle and you should be able if you really want to, bolt on a different coupler or get something like a Bulldog http://www.bulldogproducts.net/content/ ... 020&part=0 which has greater articulation for off road.
If you are serious off roading and want an Oz Hitch or its like a plate can be welded on http://ozhitch.com/gallery-2/your-hitches

Lock-N-Roll has several 50* V multiaxis hitches and couplers in different weight ratings. You will have to buy the vehicle hitch to go with it. These hitches are DOT approved.

I bought the 12K lb hitch and coupler for my trailer. It's WAY overkill but I don't have to worry about breaking it. Also this particular hitch does not suffer from the binding issues some of their lighter weight ones do. I called and talked to the owner before deciding which one to buy.
