Bed Frame

Postby Forrest747 » Thu Feb 09, 2012 3:43 pm

I am sure someone in the crew has built a queen size bed frame. The wife wants a new bed and asked if I could build one. I really cant see this being too hard.

Any advice.

I was thinking just a simple frame and insert the headboard on the back.

Something like this

First question is, do you need a frame or just a headboard?

I've done a couple of headboards and attached them to a reinforced hollywood-style frame. If you're not dead set on a footboard, this works really well.

We built one for my daughter two years ago by jigsawing and routering a nice curve in a piece of MDF, then covering it with a padded vinyl that she liked. I actually attached that one to the wall rather than the hollywood frame.
The more stuff I take along, the more time I spend taking care of my stuff!

went bed frame shopping and found a few that i liked however cost over a grand and i was like NO!!!!!

Yet i found a few features i liked. one had a drawer slide out at the foot of the bed thinking to myself i can do that, just need to find some blank drawers so i can match the front. a built in foor rest on my side of the bed would be nice.

thinking simple headboard slats maybe with slate tiles at the top or as inlays not sure. simple side rails using 1X6. draw up plans this weekend

its a work in progress.

Could go all out and Gibbs a teardrop in teh bedroom. Sure she would like that.

Hmmm, I was just looking at the pallet racking at work today, thinking that it would make an interesting, industrail bed frame. Actually I was thinking a queen size loft bed with a desk underneath, or a queen size bunk bed.
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.

 It's a box!

Build a box of any kind and add some slats and legs...Some of the platform beds are kind of nice too.
Here's a nice one...sorry about the slop. Could be any size.

Miriam hit the nail on the head, "It's a box". You are building a trailer right now so a bed frame should be a piece of cake. Just don't over think it, keep is simple.

Here's some thoughts I had for a bed. Start out with a economy steel rail type frame. Wally World has them for around $50. Make a box out of some 1 x 12 (adjust to fit your box spring) planks to fit around the perimeter. I'm guessing they should be at least as tall as the box spring maybe an inch higher. Use a dovetail joint or some angle brackets in the corners. Remember the pretty wood box is there for looks, the steel frame is carrying the load. Use screws to attach that box to the outside of the frame. If you want that wood leg look you might try using some pieces of 4 x 4 post. Just cut them a to the length of the legs, maybe a 1/4" short and drill the center out so you can slide them over the legs. Then all you have left is a head board. I bet you could make an awesome head board with some 2 x 2's, ply and a little tile.

Anyway just an idea I had.

Hi Forest747,

Take this as an opportunity to build a storage bed base. Especially if you can use a platform type bed. I have a
Temperpedic mattress so that is what I could use.

A 5ftW x 6ft6inL x12-18inH base has a lot of storage volume. There are many ways to configure it. One big box
base and a lift up top, 2-3 base boxes that you bolt together to form the total base and which could use compartments
sized to plastic bins, various sized drawers, or still kept as individual base bins, or any combo of these, with a headboard
attached.

I have one now that I made of 2 base boxes [used 3/4in plywood] that are bolted together and a headboard I made that is
bolted to that. I just used 2x4s to make the structure for the headboard and clad that with 1x4 maple with a picture frame
effect with a center plywood panel that was padded and then upholstered. It has been very successful. It is sized to use eight
17-18gal plastic storage bins, so it has 8 side-open compartments total, 4 on each side. [It' a double bed size 4ft6inW x
6ft3inL.]

Based on my experience, I'd use 3-4 individual base boxes [easier to move when needed] , with various sized drawers to suit my needs and a headboard, all bolted together. Also I'd make the height a bit shorter - go for what is comfortable to sit on
17-19in total height for both the base and mattress thicknesses combined [my current total height is ~ 20-21 in and is usable
but is just a bit high for comfortable-sitting-on-the-edge-of-the-bed-to-put-on-your-shoes use.].

Once you build one and use it, you'll wonder why all beds aren't made this way.

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

Re: Bed Frame

I made one for a customer a while back, 3" x 1/4" Square tube posts, 3" x 1/4" angle iron rails, everything welded, no fasteners of any type per customer spec. They supplied a metal flea market head and foot board they liked for a king bed, I hacked them down to queen width and welded them to the posts which I topped with some decorative caps. Oh, I almost forgot, they wanted tie down loops welded on every 6" along the outer rails :o

I still want to know how they get the thing in their house.

Hi Guys,

I would love to know in which room this was taken? I think that these were taken in Graceland but the main bedroom had a wooden frame and not red. I doubt that this was Dodgers bed.
Any idea? Thanks
