Under carriage lighting

Postby Forrest747 » Fri Feb 10, 2012 11:38 am

Looking at Zachs use of LED lights has allowed more creep to come into this project.

However running new power to LED in the cabin will be a little difficult. It did make me think about using them as a porch light, but once again wiring a difficult thing. so was thinking as a under carriage light along the edge where the frame and teh trailer meet. would require two of them and running the wires for them not overly difficult. has anyone done something like this?

We've been thinking about something along those lines too. We'll already have a porch light but thinking about a low intensity light below the frame under the doors. You know just a little light so you find the trailer in the dark. Also might prevent stepping on any unexpected visitors, like snakes. Just one of the many ideas bouncing around in the empty space between my ears. :)

You can buy under-car LED strips that would take the beating of road junk and be bright enough also. Back in my day, lol, it was neon, but they broke easily. It would already be wired for 12v dc also. I had a white set of neons under my car and loved it, tacky as it may seem now :)

looked at the undercar lighting and it was 90 dollars. Zach showed me some really inxpensive yet cools lights, if i run them in some clear accrylic i have for protection would be cheaper for sure.

Oh heck why not use 10-15 light strings of LED's to accent/outline TD shape, put them on a controller, controlled by a computer...... Why should "Christmas Lights" have all the fun....

I was thinking of something more like these (but in white) that range from $9 - $13. I haven't had a chance to look at one up close yet.

Don't tempt me. I'm half way there already.

These are the waterproof "pucks" that I use on my "porch lights". At $2.95/ea they're fairly inexpensive and are pretty bright at night.

I have solar step lights on each side of my TD. no draw on anything their own AA battery. used them all of last summer and found they are still lit the next morning http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-25ecodZ ... reId=10051 Lowes has them in pairs instead of a set of four and just slightly cheaper.

I have a solar powered rope light that I plan to put in side the TD with a simple on off switch to stop them from being on all night. http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-25ecodZ ... reId=10051

I had seen these on ebay and was thinking the same thing.

I posted the wrong type but if you go to the store they have waterproof ones.

The 3528 LED's have separate chips for each of the colors. The 5050 LED's have all three colors on each chip, therefore the hue of the color is much more consistent over the length of the strip. Also look for the strips that say they are IP68 rated (its a waterproofing rating).
