I've got like maybe 60 sq. inches to take care of...

Oh. lots of little pits! Your paint & sand plan ought to work fine.

So from now on, we should refer to this as Doug's $50 shine :R .
Looks good. Love to watch your work.

Here it is all finished. I haven't built a fire in it yet...makes all the right sounds like it should run fine. This stove has a preheater in it. You would crack the valve, fill the preheat cup...burn it off...then crack the valve a bit more till it "roared". The original instructions showed a flame thrower effect! This was called the "Hot Blast", then pull the tab on the lever out and it would allow the burner to slide into the burn position. It'll be a trip to fire up. They were proud of the fact that it only took 2 minutes to have it up and running. Bet it'll take me longer than that....

I had some paint issues on this one. The rust was incredible and lots of pits. I didn't separate the lid and burner plate from the body. Made for some tough taping and a very difficult spray. Burner grate is in engine enamel...the rest is in a catalyzed alkyd. Thing is, once you fold one up...it shows scratches, which really show in black. I'm happy, it's an 88 year old stove and it's the first Coleman. Doug

Thanks all! Keith...I've got 13 pre 1941 and 7 from the '41-'54 era and one lone 62, my youngest one. It was an 8$ find at a thrift store....used like 2 times, original box instructions...no dents. Doug
