Derating trailer springs

Postby jss06 » Sun Feb 12, 2012 9:36 pm

The trailer rides really stiff. I went back and looked at my purchase receipt and found out they are 2K leaf springs (each) on a trailer that weighs in at 1250 bs.

So what I have are 4 leaf springs at 27 inches long. I am trying to decide which leaves I should remove to give a better ride. The 2 middle? The 2 bottom? One of the 2 middle leaves? :?

I just purchased the monroe shock retrofit kit and want to derate the springs when I install the shocks.

Hi John,

Your best bet is to contact the spring manufacturer.
They can easily tell you which, or how many spring leaves to remove.
While you have the spring pack apart, it is good practice to clean, paint, and add lubricant or an insert between them to keep them operating as new for many years to come.
A thin layer of rust will prevent the spring leaves from moving against each other as intended.
The result are springs that give a very stiff ride, no matter if they are correctly sized for the load.
